Gold Fever !!

Had an extraordinary afternoon yesterday. An elderly gentleman who lives in one of the apartment buildings that I take care of had heard that I knew some things about coins. So he proceeded to pull these beauties out of his pocket. They were taped together with very old, yellowed scotch tape and had been given to him on his 10th birthday...he's gotta be in his mid-eighties now. Anyways I told him I'd be back the next day with my Red Book and a couple of coin flips. So today I gladly put them into flips for him so they could'nt be further damaged in any way. And showed him what they were probably worth based on their condition. I told him I figured it was around 1K for both coins...he was impressed. Love that gold....wish I could afford it. Enjoy the pics !

Wow thats cool! Be sure to go back there with your detector and see how they ring up.

I'm told the old us gold coins ring up like good high silver, but I've never had the pleasure.

I had the honor of selling a $50 Canadian Maple Leaf for a friend's mother a while back. So naturally I took a moment to pass my Ace 250 over the coin. And it chimed-in at the 50 cent and dollar notches. Not at all where I expected it to read, but I got the impression that this was due to the coins size or gold content (1 oz.)

Cool story and pics McDave, thanks!
Not sure where the $2.50 piece rings up, however, I do know the $5. piece comes up 8/23 digital and it is right in the square tab range on the Smart screen on my SE Pro.
I would think its safe to say the $2.50 piece comes in at the nickel range.

going by your pics and my 2010 coin red book the $10 gold pc. is worth $2500.00 and the $1.00 pc. is $3000.00. i say this cause i don't see any flaws that by the book would get them rated less than a ms 63. those are some fine coins. i'm no expert but i just don't see any flaws. the old fella took real good care of them.

My mistake, that is a $10. piece not a $5., that is a $2.5 piece though.

The $10 coin has some surface scratches that you are'nt seeing in the pictues. And I would say that the $2.50 coin is in better shape as far as grading goes. I am no professional grader, and I just estimated their worth based on the lowest end of the grading scale, which was VF-20 for these coins. I advised him to get them graded if he wanted to get the most out of a potential buyer. And to of course call me when he does decide to part with them...I get first shot at them if I want.

That's great that you were able to do this for that elderly fellow. Even at bullion value, there is quite a bit of money in those coins. Be sure that he doesn't go to any unscrupulous coin dealers or those places that buy gold - it would be terrible for him to get ripped off. If you know an honest dealer, you may want to ask him about getting them graded - it may not be worth it if their bullion value is at or near their numismatic value. Hope it all turns out well for everyone.

Yeah Mc Dave, I checked on the two coins and i came up with about $900- $1000 also, nice coins though!
If he decided to sell and your aren't buying, please tell him i would be very interested!
Thanks, - Ron

don't remember what pages i was looking at before but looking this eve i discovered the 2 1/2 was called a quarter eagle and the ten is an
eagle. i hope they grade out to m-63 even with some scratches. hope the best for the gent.

He is not the least bit interested in selling right now. Was more curious as to their value. I can only hope that his kids don't take them to the "Gold Guys"...who would be likely to offer them a third of their actual value....if they are lucky.
