Gold from Florida, Papa Joe's area..

I finally got a chance to download the pictures of a 5 day trip to Florida to my buddies house in New Port Ritchie. I hunted many beaches and got the chain from a beach that Papa Joe has mentioned before. I was just lucky to hit the water before some of the locals did and up came the chain. The diamond ring was found the day after the guy that lost it offered $1000.00 for it.We hunted the day that he lost it in the surf but could not locate it..He had everyone looking for it for the money..We spent about 4 hours but the surf was just too much. So we decided to go back the next day for it was really calm for that Monday and heck a reward such as that makes a really nice trip worth it..In about 2 hours up came the ring and when I looked at it and thought," wow " such a small ring for such a reward. I called the guy and now the reward was $100.00. Due to Florida laws in finding the ring and even that he changed the amount, the police was called by him to have me arrested for holding his ring. Now I was a low down scum of the earth trying to rip him off on the ring. To make it short the police most certainly believed me and said just to give him the ring back for he could take me to small claims court sometime in the future and just cause me problem. We had a witness to the offer but but it was just getting out of hand..Now I"m back to carrying a contract to locate goods lost as I did over 30 years ago to protect yourself from this happening. I would have found the ring and gave it back to him without the reward but that made it sweeter to find it and look for over 6 hours to find it.

I think i would have went to court over the ring if you had a witness of what he told you was the reward of 1000.00
make him pay it in court then he can pay court cost too,and your cost for having to go to court
that way HE will not try that again, hes lucky you called him to get him his ring in the first place....
as for getting somthing in writeing next time good for you,As for returning the ring at no charge to him I too would have done the same
thing without asking for a reward BUT with what he did That was wrong of him

I would have put it back where I found it.

You got a good bit of loot. Congrats on that. Shame about that one ring. Sometimes people are pretty ungrateful jerks. Too bad the police didn't switch it around to a breach of contract issue instead of treating it just as a property ownership issue.

It would have been really sad if the ring had been accidently dropped
on the concrete and accidently stepped on and then given back to him.
Why do some people have to be complete jerks? Kudos to you dirtdigger
for doing the right thing and returning the ring to the ungreatful person.

Dirtdigger,

I'm sorry that happened to you, and you did the right thing even though it wasn't fair to you. But I look at it this (What goes around comes around) His day will come. And I believe we all have one last Judge to face, and he won't lie or weasel his way out of all the bad things he's done to people. And from what he did to you, he probably has a long list. Your a good honest person. I commend you. Have a better next hunt and that's some really great finds you have there. Gene

Well said Gene. Dirtdigger, you can hold your head high and know that your detecting compadres hold you in high esteem. The ring owner is probably living happily under some rock.

Nice lot of loot ya found there.
Good story, but with an unhappy ending.
Karma mate, Karma.
HH fellas and cheers

As an EX Florida resident, all i can say is; "Yup, thats Florida!".The land of fruits, nuts and crooks.DD, good karma is wasted on Florida. My respects to you for doing the right thing.

I dont mind searching for someone's lost ring, but if I cant find it in 15 mins, I tell them sorry. I'm not in it for them, sorry, either someone else will find it or it will pop up later. If any detectorist weren't around when they lost, then what would they do?

WTG I wonder was it realy his ring?were there any marking to prove it was his.Nice chain, which beach did you find it at?:usaa:

hey Dirtdigger, what contract are you talking about you carried back 30 years ago. i live in floridadadadada ditt dee dee state and think i should get something like that. i would hate to have some scum bag do that to me.

Hey Atrembla

I tried to pm you but I guess you haven't gotten that set up as yet. So please email me at dirtdigger08@gmail.com. I'll send you the contracts that I had to revive because of the times we live in. All so because of some of the bad diggers we have in our TERRIFIC hobby that just can't follow the rules and the courtesy of leaving a person property or beach as it was before they detected it, if anything it should be cleaner than before they started.. I relic hunt and I find stuff that was left and buried 40 years ago besides the people that hunt the beaches and leave the torn up bear can and pieces of trash still in their holes. This and many other problems are causing us to lose our privilege to continue this hobby
