Firstly; hello everyone
I'm new to this forum....i live and prospect for gold; full time in Northern Australia.
I'd be really interested to hear from anyone that has had success using a explorer on the goldfields.
Some of the areas i prospect for gold have old townships/camps; in areas that have often been built on good gold ground....eg the big inside bank of a gold bearing river.
These areas are a real pain to use machines such as minelab sd's and gp's; due to the amount of rubbish present.....some gold patches often running through the middle of an old camp.
The reason i first purchased the explorer was to find trinkets; left over from the old timers; not really for the finding of gold....
However it started when i turned up on the goldfield; with my newly purchased explorer.....
Myself being newcomer to the detecting game; was with friends that had been prospecting gold for a number of years.
They were interested in the new treasure machine; and were keen to see it perform on some of the rubbish areas.
Needless to say all i knew was how to do was turn it on; not having had the time to read the instructions prior to arriving.
I proceeded to walk off swinging the detector.....my friends quite amused at the array of musical sounds it was making over the trash present.
After about ten minutes they left me to my treasure hunting; while they walked back to the camp to finish their afternoon drink.
I found a few bullets, buttons and some silver solder from the old tin cans that they used to make. I noticed the silver gave a rather sweet response....
After a while, i decided that i would ignore the other sounds for now, and just chase the sweet sounding targets.
Pretty soon i was walking down a small gully/washout....rubbish everywhere.
Still in sight of the camp; i got a load sweet sounding target.....i kicked a rock out of the way and proceeded to dig; soon realising the target was infact the larger piece of rock i'd first kicked.
You can now imagine the shock on the faces when i walked back into camp with a rather impressive gold nugget.....35 ounce specimen, containing 13.5 ounces of gold..... my first piece ever.
Funny story none the less.....now several years later with a little more experience, i have found numerous gold nuggets with the explorer in rubbish areas.
Having said that, the machine i normally prospect with is a GP extreme (soon to be updated)....As expressed i'd really be interested in hearing from anyone that may be able to shed some info on the use of the explorer on gold....any tricks you've found out etc.
I notice i often dig a smaller piece of gold with the explorer; get a slight response....lose it; and then hear it again????.....if that makes sense.
Thanks all; happy prospecting and treasure hunting
