Gold Ring Versus Pull Tab

I think John in Edmonton has said he can hear the difference between a pull tab and a gold ring. I just tested about 15 rings and 5 or 6 different pull tabs (air test) and I can't tell the difference. The only thing I noticed is I got much stronger signals from the rings at 4 inches and broken signals from most of the pulltabs at 4 inches. I have found my share of rings and I never said, that's a ring, before I started digging.

Any help always appreciated.

Depends on your hearing. Many folks are slightly tone deaf. I can tell the difference between a ring or a nickel and a pulltab. It's slight but it's there.

Sometimes I'll just break off the beaver tail and slip the ring over the 1st joint of my little finger. It makes me feel warm inside.

I have no doubt that there are subtle differences between good targets and bad. It takes a trained ear to hear the difference. I have not found much gold, but the same holds true for coins, even with the Ace 250. I dig all targets, but there are times when I am 100% sure it is a coin. I am almost always correct on these signals. It is easier on deeper coins for some reason.

Just recently I got a good solid hit near half dollar/quarter. It was solid & steady, but I was not convinced. There was something about it that made me unsure. What I dug was a 1903 Barber Half that was bent. That is why it did not have the smooth "bong" sound that a coin will usually give.

I buried two rings and a gold necklace three variations of pull tabs just today to test also, and there was nothing that I could discern.

One time I was hunting with my old Whites EagleII and got a hit with VDI at 10. Never dig 10s, usually foil, but this time it just sounded to good to pass up. Turned out to be a small gold ring. Just a fealing, nothing jumped out and said, GOLD RING!. All I can say is,"If it feels good, Dig it.

I've only dug a couple of gold rings (in lawn), but found that they tend to sound more like a coin and lock onto 1 notch. A pull tab will often show up at notch 4 then bounce to the left. Sometimes pinpointing a shallow pull tab, it will give a single beep in one direction and 2 the other way. A coin or ring will give either a single beep or double beep, but not one of each. This only happens sometimes, primarily on very shallow pull tabs.

If you like I can send you all my pulltabs and I only want a nickel a piece! You found a great incentive to to dig pulltabs.

I knew I had become a true metal detectorist when I started getting more excited about the pulltab signal than about the quarter signal. I still hope for a gold ring with every hole too!

I suppose if I was digging 3 or 4 gold rings a day I might learn to hear the difference. When you're digging 6 or 8 a year it's hard to compare. Plus there's all that whooping and screaming when you see that gold. Also the cartwheels and handsprings make me dizzy.

I laughed when I read your comment Chris. I've been guilty of doing that sometimes. Although there is no value in a pull tab (unless they are made of titanium,which some are) it's just that you have been successful at making another recovery. As I use only a screw driver, locating tabs are about the hardest things to recover. The fact that you can do it fairly easily with an Ace, is only building confidence in the machine and yourself. Maybe, we're both a bit crazy, but too bad.

got a nice soft 11 on my old spectrum.it just sounded smooth.out popped a 1906 five dollar gold piece at 3 inches of depth
