gold rings and the Explorer

Big Boys Hobbies

Well-known member
Since i have not got any response in the classroom ill ask this here.

Ive been doing some self taught experimenting with gold rings and pull tabs. It seems with the limited gold rings my wife has to borrow seem to hit lower (on average) on the smart screen an most pull tabs i have. Seems nickles are hitting just barely above gold rings and pull tabs higher than that. I know not ALWAYS this is true but is anyone finding the same results i am?

I am mainly a coin hunter but with the down time i have recovering from a torn ac joint shoulder surgery i have nothing better to do than experiment. TV gets old real quick.

Thanks for any and all help in advance!!

Stoop, many smaller women's rings will read at Foil on most detectors, or sometimes into the nickel range. However, most medium-sized rings ( wedding bands, women's gold class rings) will hit on pulltab or occasionally nickel. Large gold rings will hit into the zinc penny, coin range, or screwcap range (men's class rings, heavy wedding bands).

Gold chains will rarely hit above foil, if that high. Many hit at iron, and can only be gotten in all metal mode. A monster gold chain would probably hit higher but I haven't gotten one yet. Hope the chain has an attached charm, sometimes this is your only hope of picking them up.

Silver chains, surprisingly, also hit low (foil, pulltab).

Fisher did a test of about 200+ gold rings as to where they read on the detector, and I think about 50% registered as pulltab, about 30% read as foil, 5% as nickel, 5% as zinc penny, and another 10% as coin.

I suppose other machines have similar responses - basically, you don't win very often if you don't dig foil and pulltabs, I found this out the hard way. I found very few golds my first few years detecting because I would cherry pick the coins and nickels, without digging pulltabs. Once I stopped doing this, I was rewarded with more gold, but it was not overnight. My pouch is constantly filled with aluminum pieces and pulltabs on every trip - this is what it really takes to find the gold I have found.

Hope this helps,

Mark

Thanks for the reply and i already know they hit in the pull tab range for most detectors. I was trying to specifically target the explorer and on the smart find screen. The rings i have ring a lower tone than tabs and hit slightly lower on the smartfind screen. I wanted to see if the was what most people find or is it just the rings i have access too.

Thanks again.

Most of the smaller rings I find that are gold usually hit just below nickel in the smart find. I never use the digital unless I just want to see for curiosity. Locusman was also correct in the chains, last one I found had a gold pendant attached. When I say below nickel I'm talking foil range.
