Well my chemicals are still valid, I just checked them as shown. Here is the line from a 10 K ring I dug. Drop of 10 K on the left, drop of 14K on right.

You scratch the suspected gold item over the slate piece to get a rich line. Then you put a drop of karat tester on the line. If it dissolves the line the karat is lower than the bottle. You go up or down with the karat rating till you find the one it is. If all dissolve the line then the piece is not gold. If you start with 10K and it dissolves the line then it will save you further testing.

And here is a 14 K test - 14 k on left, 18K on right.The test bottles go up to 22K.
As for silver - you put a drop of Silver Black on the piece and let it dry a moment. Then if you cannot wash it off it's silver, if it comes off it's not silver. Even hard scrubbing with your finger wont remove it if it's silver.
Neal - I haven't heard anything about the silver test chemical going bad. Maybe it's not Silver Black but some chemical they referred to. Silver Black is made to accent the design on silver pieces with the black. steve in so az
