Gold Spear

Found this at a garage sale. Man told me his dad used it to prospect with. Called a rod with an electrical box on top a gold spear. Is this some type of hoax that was used on prospectors? If this is a metal detector, what size of an area can a person detect?
Thanks for any help. Marv

Ummmmm, got a picture of this 'spear?'

Thanks, taz! Add another thing I've learned here.

At 2000 euros it still looks hokey to me. (That is close to $3000 USD!)

It sounds like it detects particles of gold that directly contact the tip of the probe. Sounds remotely possible but how many times would you pound it into the ground before touching a fragment of gold. I think I would stick to a radio frequency device that detects before you go into the ground. IE a gold finding metal detector.

I do not personally put much faith in LRL (Long Range Locators), or "Magic Box" detectors...Take one apart and electronically, the circuit (if you can call it that), does absolutely nothing but light a few LEDs maybe, make a speaker humm maybe, and drain a few batteries...

HH,

The gold spear is mentioned in Dave McCracken's video Modern Gold Mining Techniques. It looks like it is a viable tool, but it only detects gold near the tip of the spear when it is inserted into the ground.
