If the Explorers can find a Nickel??? Whay dont i see more Gold on this forum??? Thanks Mickfin

Well,I think you find gold where people could lose rings, swimming areas. I have found one gold ring this year and several pieces of gold plated pocket watches and rings. You are right, the SE is a nickel finder and if one keeps digging those signals, sooner or later gold will appear. I would give my left you know what to find a gold coin, but so would nearly everyone else . LOL

Tom in salenas Knows maybe hill tell us???? Mickfin

The larger mens rings fall in that nickel range.... but almost 80 of all jewelry is bought and worn by women. Their smaller rings. earrings and such will fall in the foil range... which in a park not many look for just because they are looking for NICKELS. Those that find them normally are those digging it all in those ranges. Also, like was mentioned it places like the beaches where they drop off and are gone almost immediately since gold weighs about 100 times that of sand. Fewer and fewer people are wearing jewelry now days as well. HOWEVER.... all that said i have noticed with the price of gold we are more willing to dig some of that overlooked trash and making more finds. You also dont hear much about exporers being used on the beach even thou they work well there. I believe its because BBS is set on detectors as specific 1.5 increments rather than random. That what makes Sovs and Xcals the machine of choice for those disc hunters. Hope this helps... im full of worthless info.

I have only dug one or two clad nickels and one buffalo with my SE so far. I have'nt hardly seen or heard any 9-6 to 10-6 signals in any of the spots I have been to. And the 10K gold necklace I found was buried in the foil range at the bottom-center of the smartscreen.

haha, "you called"? :)

Dew is right: The reason you don't see many bragging posts on an Explorer forum, for gold rings and jewelry, is that the Explorer excells in turf and relics, primarily. Not that it CAN'T find gold rings, but that gold rings and gold jewelry is mostly the domain of beach hunting. And even though an Explorer can be used on a beach quite nicely, most hardcore beach hunters (who get out in the wet) tend to like the Excal, or pulse machines.

I use my Explorer on the beach all the time, and have found gold rings with mine. However, I "paid the price" in 2009, and had to send mine to the factory d/t I got hit by a wave. And ........ despite being wrapped up for the winter storms in plastic, ..... water still got in and totally fried it.

Yes there's gold rings on land too. But to pull them out of junky parks, you'd have to dig all the foil, tabs, etc..... Not just nickels (because only a small percentage of gold rings reads right exactly where nickels read), but every single little foil wad, beaver tail, etc...... And if you start down that road, why do you need an explorer? Heck, even cheapo whites and garretts can do that. Take any cheapo machine to any blighted urban junky park, and I gaurantee you that you can fill your apron full of low conductors.

Thus most guys who want to get gold rings, go to swimming beaches. And I guess not many explorer guys are currently using their explorers for that, even though they could.

Thanks Tom 4R your info, I Hunt with a Garrett Sea Hunter in swim Holes N go to Beaches for Gold, I want a Explorer 4R Deep silver???
But i just wanted to know why we don`t see to much Gold with the Explorers, Thanks you ancerd my Question Tom,

Another difference.... jewelry just dont sink deep in denser soil. Even thou they are heavy with no surface there is a lot of factors that keep them from sinking. So like Tom said try and find an inexpensive machine for the park you are just as well off if its jewelry you are looking for. BUT.... on a beach you need that depth. I read a post by NASA Tom about him doing some beach testing with a ring that he had attached a piece of dental floss to. He was at the water line put the ring down while he adjusted his detector..... and bam it was gone. He did a measurement and it had sunk to almost 2 ft. Which put it beyond detection especially VLF or disc machines. People still visits beaches especially those snow birds with their bling. But sports complexes, shelter houses, redesigning of parks, and there just doesnt seem to be as many people getting out to our parks to loose these value items.

I found 2 gold class ring this last year in 1 yard along with silver bracelette.

As mentioned above gold is not lost a lot in yards or even parks but if gold is there it can and will be found.

I will be going to Atlantic City this weekend for 6 days and I will see what it can do on the beach. I bought a Cobra along with the SE Pro (the BOGO sale with Kellyco) and I will do some water detecting as well.

Have a wonderful day and Happy Hunting

Thank you for the business! Keep us posted. I'll bet the beach in Atlantic City will have a LOT if a bunch of hunters haven't gotten there first!

Thank You for all of the info, Mickfin

I found 2 gold rings in the past 4 days at 2 different local parks in Cincinnati. They were both old signet rings, one in 14K and one 10K. And they rang up just like nickels. To see the most gold found by Explorers, go to the beach/water forum. Lots of goodies. HH

Thanks Brillo, I have a Explorer SE on the way,

Hi Tom thanks for your Info, Wen i had a Whites Pro-6000 I got wiped out by a Wave also, Now i have a Garrett Sea Hunter for the
fresh and salt water, So wen you use your Explorer at the Beach, Do you use plastic bags all the time cozz of Salt Air???
On Explorers wear the rod gos in the front is wear Salt Air can get in??? What do you think Tom???
So thanks for explaining way we don`t see Gold on the forums, Its not that Explorers cant find it its the Salt Air and fear of the water????
Have you talked to Paul Palermo lately we Hunt sometimes Visala is two HRs from me, I Live in Los Banos, Mickfin

Mickfin, no ..... I do not wrap my explorer up in plastic, for the beach, when I'm not in rain, or expecting to be "fighting waves". If I'm only in the ebbing surf (knee deep in + out action), I don't consider it necessary. But others would say that the salt air itself is a danger, even if you are not going to be broad-sided with water, or dunk it. I dunno, perhaps that's true, but I haven't gotten that hardcore. And I strictly hunt land, when there's no beach erosion going on, so it's not like I'm a "year round" beach hunter, who would subject it to constant salt air. I think it's factory sealed enough for casual beach-side use, now and then. But others may disagree.

No, I haven't seen or heard from Paul in awhile.

Thanks Tom it was good to talk to you, Mickfin,

I have never found a gold coin but I feel very confident that I haven't skipped over many assuming they would hit in the gold range on my machine. While on a recent trip, we attempted to gain permission at a property when the home owner reaveled some info that he wasn't supposed to. He informed us of a nearby friends property where gold coins have been found. A concrete floor was poured in an outbuilding on a farm years ago and now the ground is eroding from the side of the building beneath the concrete floor. Two late 1860's $20 gold double eagles were found in the run off next to the building. The family bought a cheap detector and decided to look for more. They found a $5 gold piece and nothing more. We knew this information before asking for permission to hunt. The wife was home alone and was more than excited to show two complete strangers what they had found and where. She was even kind enough to THROW THEM :surprised: on the ground and let me listen to them so I would know what they sounded like. The $20 gold double eagles hit beautifully like a silver half dollar, and the $5 gold piece hit like a penny/dime on my Exp II. I didn't expect that. She gave us permission to hunt. Then her husband came home. When he saw the detectors as he pulled up, he became a little irate. I was very pleased that he didn't shoot us (or his wife who gave us permission) before we were asked to leave. Again, I don't have much experience finding or analyzing many gold coins but I do know of at least two that sound nothing like gold. Also, when hunting old farm properties, give extra thought to the dirt floor of old outbuildings if you come across any. This may have been a more common place to stash away a cache than I had previously figured. Just some food for thought, JJ
