Goldpic Detector?

Just wondering if anyone has tested this unit yet under Aussie conditions and is it worth building? Also interested in any comments on the unit..

I have built the detector and have made the 7.5",
4x14" and a DD(still being built). The machine is built for beach hunting, but Iam trying to see what happens on dry ground. The depth of objects which I have detected is what is on Goldpic site. Eric purchased the kit, but I haven't herd anything from his findings.

To add some more details about goldpic. The best I can come with the DD coil is about 4" to a 1dwt. gold nugget. With my wedding ring and can get about 8.5". So there is possibility in detecting nuggets. I have tried some hot rocks which I brought back form the diggings in the Sierras. No effect which is good and also predicted. Does anyone know what the purpose of a Tx coil having three legs coming from it? A middle leg that is wound half way of the winding. How to hook up the middle leg?

Rick, If I am reading your message right, the transmit coil has three leads or wires coming from it. I cannot guarantee what the GoldPic is doing as I am not very familiar with it. However, I made a Dual D coil which was center tapped for a home made detector. The center tap went to +V. swithing first one side, then the other side of the coil to ground with a transistor, you can generate an alternating magnetic field. The polarity of the pulse is reversed as you switch either one side or the other side of the search coil to ground. Although I am not familier with the GoldPic other than its use of a PIC 16F84 microcontroller chip, I thought that it used a single coil and not a dual D. Maybe this is a new revision or a modification of what I have seen? You mentioned that the extra lead came from half way down the coil so this would back up what I am saying. The only other third lead for a PI that I can think of would be for a farady shield. This would not however connect to the coil and would be grounded. I am not sure if this will help you or cause you more confusion. Good Luck, Dave. * * *

Dave, Thanks for the info on the DD coil. I have made the Goldpic to be either a dual coil or mono coil. I will have to think about what you have mentioned. Sounds very interesting. Thanks Rick S

I am thinking of picking up one of Trevor's kits to play with and was wondering if anyone has had any problems recently finding components. I found a parts substitution post but it was about 6 months old. Any rough ideas as to how readily available parts are now?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
As I recall, the parts substitutions were because some parts are not available in the US. If you are in the US, the parts substitutes should be easily obtained. The only difficulty I had was that I assumed the parts that were suggested in one of the posts would be a drop in replacement. One of the transistors had a different pin out and I had to remove and reorient the part. Then all worked properly.
Good Luck,
Charles

Thanks,
Did your sub. parts list come with your GoldPic kit, from the Detector Classroom Forum, or did you find the subs on your own?

It was one of the posts on this forum. Unfortunately I don't remember which part for sure but it was one of the transistors so make sure you check the data sheet on them so you can be sure to install it correctly if you go that route. It didn't blow the transistor but the circuit didn't work.
Good luck,
Charles

I am looking for the assembler code for programming the PIC16F84 of the goldpic 3 schematic.
Can anyone help me and email me then assembler source code ?
Thanks

I am searching for this too.I had it and trashed my drive. Please help i you get it?

How well does the GoldPIC 3 work?
Are the depths he has indicated for
various materials about right?
Thanks, Bob

IY,
Yes you will get very close to those numbers found on his Trevors site. I have built the detector and my numbers were close to his, if not the same. For finding gold chains or nugget shooting, not a good idea.

I too am curious as to how the GoldPic rates as compared to say a PI surf machine from Whites, or Tesoro, Garretts. Can any of the homebrew machines stack against the commercial ones?
Which circuit delivers the best performance?
Also, the fellow who makes the Goldpic locks the firmware. Can a standard pic be programmed using the code availible from the forum, and what are the advangtages?
Regards, and thanks

Can anyone help me and email me then assembler source code ?
Thanks

Yes !!!
You can buy it here:
http://home.global.co.za/~trh/
and respect the autor of the goldpic: his program is not a freeware.......
The price for one part is not so high.
SO BUY THE PIC programmed...
You never find the programm for the gold pic in the web as his autor put the pic in protected mode ( great value).
Respect the autor of program as they assume to give you THE BETTER OF HIM.
Perhaps you can find programm that work on the printed board but this is not the original and it can't give the sensibility of the ORIGINAL.
STOP and RESPECT THE PROTECTED DATA !!!

Hi
Check this out.... The Gold Pic is only a clone of this original project designed by Mark Stuard. The source code is there as well....
