GoldQuest ss 2

Eric Foster;
I have been following a discussion fo your detectors modified by Reg Sniff this used for gold nugget hunting...where in the USA are these machines available? That is assuming that this is an appropriate question for this forum. The concept of a good, light weight PI for nugget hunting is very attractive...thanks
fredm

Eric or Reg can talk for themselves of course, but it is fairly simple, the Current Goldquest SS is the state of the art and when the DD coil comes out will be even more versatile. Simple buy one and you have it!!! Sufscanner.com on main page here is dealer, Mr Bill can answer your questions. Good Luck!!!

Thanks Don;
Do you have any experience with the GQ2 in the goldfields of Az and California-or Australia? I have some experience with vlf and the Minelab series as well trying a Whites PI for nugget hunting...hot rocks were terrible with the Whites...I am aware of the great reputation Mr Foster's detector has for beach hunting, and I have tried to follow all the Posts the Mr Reg Sniff- I hope that is how he spells his name- has made regarding his modified GQ regarding nugget hunting...Nugget hunting with a pulse detector the size of a vlf would be marvelous!!!

Yes, within limitations it will work in low to moderate mineralized ground, when the DD coil comes out it should handle most things. I would suggest you talk with Bill at Surfscanner.com, he knows development(is dealer for Eric's detectors_USA) and Regs work and think he can answer most of your questions. Good Luck.

Hi Fred,
I am assuming you were following the information posted on the Nuggetshooter (NS) forum regarding my comments about my modified GQ clone.
Now, to my knowledge, the DD coil isn't available yet on the GQ, but it is my understanding the new pc boards have been modified for them. So, the addition of a DD coil is much easier on the newer GQ's.
To the best of my knowledge, the only DD coils in use on the GQ in the US are ones that I built. My dad and I use them and there is one more presently owned by a Paul in CA. He has posted some info about his use of the DD coil on this forum. This coil was originally installed on a GQ owned by a Scott while he lived in AZ. This is the one also mentioned on the NS forum.
Now, I have tried the DD across AZ, in Colorado, and Paul has tried it some in CA. However, it has not been tried in Australia, as far as I know.
There was a post on this forum by a Kev, I believe who built a DD and was using it on a beach in NZ.
The DD coil doesn't make the GQ perfect, but it does dramatically reduce any ground signal, making hunting very easy in most areas. In the worst places, just hunting a little slower usually takes care of any problems.
Now, you mentioned you had problems with the White's PI and hotrocks. I haven't tried the Whites, but on my PI, very few rocks will generate a signal of any significance. However, volcanic rock such as basalt will produce a response. On a mono coil, the signal is quite dramatic. There will still be a response when using a DD coil, but the response will be much less. Also, moving the coil just a little closer or farther from the rock will cause significant audio changes, making it much easier to separate rocks from metal objects.
There are a few rocks that will cause a strong positive response when using a mono that may produce a slight negative response on a DD. I was surprised when I first tested them. These rocks were sent to me from Utah, I believe.
Finally, I have come across a few hotrocks that will generate a positive response on both a DD and a mono, but they have been rare.
The black sand that causes a strong response on a VLF produces little or no response on a PI. I say little, because one may get a small response, not from the black sand, but from when the search coil passes from the black sand to a clay dirt. With practice, such situations can be easily determined.
I was hoping that Eric was close to bringing a DD coil out, but I have heard that there have been problems obtaining coil forms.
I have been reluctant to build coils for other GQ's. The reason is my GQ clone is a little different than ones coming from Eric. As such, building a DD to work well on another PI is a challenge. I would almost need the PI available to assure a proper match.
Another reason is I have been constantly changing little things which has caused me to have to build different coils. So, until recently, I wasn't sure just what I would ultimately end up with as a coil design. I am still not sure I am completely done at this point.
It does become very tricky to build a coil that works properly at 10 usec or less. Damping of the coil becomes very critical. On my PI, I have the initial damping slightly underdamped and I make final adjustments in the coil housing or plug. This has allowed a wider arrangement of coils to be used, but does make mine different than Eric's.
I hope this helps provide more information about the DD and the GQ.
Reg

Thanks again, Don...Reg I followed your column for years...I always feel like a half-wit trying to understand all of your comments; and that is knowing you are keeping things simple for people such as me...anyway I appreciate your response to the questions here and on the other forums that I follow. I am not in a hurry to buy a detector until the fall here in the USA so hopefully there will be some more solid info regarding a new off-the-shelf Gold detector/coils...happy hunting

Hello Reg and Fred,
Ever since waterproofing my Goldquest and having to hard wire Eric's 11" mono coil to the waterproof GQ the 11" DD coil you made Reg is still used but for other Pi's I currently use.
I was able to get away with using this 11"DD coil on these other Pi's because they are not near as sensitive as the GQ, The 11" DD coil you made for the GQ Reg operates well with my home built HH Pi and now the modified CS-6 in the picture below. Currently the coils including the mini probe work well with the modified CS-6.
The 11"DD coil is a great coil which helps Pi's operate with better stability when the ground get's tough, Between Eric's coils and your DD coil both do extremely well here in California.
Happy trails, Paul (Ca)

Paul, have you used your GQ for nugget hunting. If so what areas of california? Did you use both mono and DD? I am not interested in finding grain sized gold...I can use a gold bug for that. I am interested in a PI that is the size of a regular VLF...I donot nugget hunt enough to justify keeping a GP or GP3000 around; besides the akwardness of those machines...
thanks
fred

Hello Fred,
Here in California my main gold finds are not of the nugget type but rather the gold jewelry people drop at the beach. We have two types of gold jewelry beach hunting and I prefer the wet sand or surf type recovery rather than searching the dry sand. Dry sand searching is too tough on my feet and legs and I would rather recovery a gold ring from the wet sand or surf because I've earn it <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Other neat items to be found are expensive watches and the real good watches will survive the tough ocean.
I have found small broken pieces of lead and even a couple of pieces of gold jewelry that would be classified as the same size of a small gold nugget with my Goldquest, My GQ even picks up the small gold rings other Pi's can't detect.
"Coils" Because the DD coil Reg made for my GQ is not designed for water hunting I use the 11" Mono coil Eric provides with the GQ, I've used the 11" DD coil on my GQ before with great results including the beach area but then it's not designed for surf searching and I was very careful with using this coil. For the most part the DD coil performed excellent including Eric's coils which in my case Eric's 11" mono coil has more sens to the smaller conductors. Now, If i was in an area my unit couldn't perform well then I would slap on the 11" DD coil.
Also, My unit is not anywhere near stock as Scott, Reg and Eric I believe added on an extra filter for my GQ before I bought the unit from Scott. This filter when applied helps my unit perform great when the conditions are tough such as desert hunting and now the rough surf soil of California, The DD coil even helps the unit if I was to search in the high desert.
Thanks Fred and and happy trails,
Paul (Ca)
