Goldquest strikes "Down Under"

Thought I'd start posting some "pre-summer" finds from the beach. The left ring is a very nice Sterling Silver dolphin style ring, and the other is an even nicer 18kt gold wedding band....these were found in deep wet sand, but the GQ sniffed them out no problems
Tony.

That's not a wedding band it's a toe ring...nice

Joe,
Usually, I never post depths on deep targets as some people always doubt your claims, and secondly, how deep do you know you actually dug it from when it suddenly appears in your scoop.
The signal on the gold ring was only the smallest of threshold deviation.....I can then replicate that signal after digging it up. I do this by tying fishing line to the ring and then slowly burying it to a depth that equals the initial signal strength. I know this is not totally precise, but an error of 1" either way might be about right. This is fairly conservative as the object has been dug up and then re-buried. The depth was 16". My settings were at 10uS and SAT at MIN.
Tony.

Joe,
I went outside an buried the ring in a large tub of compacted wet sand (not salty). The ring was detectable at no less than 14.5". I am very confident of the 16" in saturated salt beach sand. This ring is only a narrow 4.5 grams, so it's definitely not one of the big chunky fat rings that the GQ will pick up at 20".
One thing to remember is any depth testing on typical coins is not as impressive when compared to SMALLER gold targets, and that's just how I like it. I'm not after a Coinquest SS.

G'day Frank,
It's always nice for someone else to support your claims...if anything I am slightly conservative with my depth measurements.
I know how vital it is to concentrate hard on those repeatable minor threshold variations, because I keep finding good stuff the deeper I go. It's then all too easy to think "oh, not another knee deep hole".
How's that super machine going anyway?
I am one extremely happy GQSS user down this way
It's getting nice and hot now, so I'm hoping for a good haul this summer.

I am kind of a hard case in someways...I try not to look a fellow in the face and say I do not believe him...I just stay silent and say to him, "Is that Right?"...being nice, but
I was told that a better set of headphone would allow me to hear deeper targets with my Goldquest and an air check would produce a better air test with a good pair of earphone. I have always used the cheapest phones "Calrads". I reluctly paid the higher dollar to Bill and bought the Grey Ghost with the limiter circuit and the air test on a US Nickel for me was 1" plus better. The Goldquest was seeing it before but my ears were not getting the message.
Of course now I am a "praiser" of the better earphones and I respect them whereas the less priced ones I dropped quiet often and didn't care...

Frank,
Yes, I agree completely with what you say.
I purchased a set of Gray Ghost headphones for my Goldquest. The audio is great with the volume limiter, as well as giving a lower audio tone which seems to suit my hearing. My previous headphones were a pair of Sennheiser's, which had no volume control I found the pitch too high as well.
All the best,
Tony.

I have a GQ SS and am having a hell of a time with it at 10us. At that setting, she is not able to hold a steady threshold. Without the steady threshold, I can't hear minor threshold variations. Only big BEEPS.
When I set the delay to 1 to 2 notches from 10us, I can hold a steady threshold but then I may not have as much sensitivity to gold.
I hunt in California. I guess I am cursed.
JT
p.s. I note that you run with SAT at SLOW. What effect does this have? I notice that my threshold ismore stabel there but I dont knwo what effect it has so I keep it at MEDIUM.

JT,
I hunt at 10uS and a slow SAT only on:
1. All dry sand (including any black sand)
2. All wet sand (including any black sand)
3. Water to about ankle deep
Any water deeper than ankle deep requires me to increase my REJECT to no more than 15uS...this includes water to shoulder deep. I will increase my SAT to MEDIUM in the deeper water as well. For me, 10uS in water deeper than about ankle height starts to get a little noisy. I have a very smooth threshold at 10uS and slow SAT at the conditions described above. Because I naturally sweep very slowly, I default to a slow SAT whenever conditions allow me. Tests I have done on various gold rings show improved depth with a slow SAT....maybe in the order of 15% when compared to a fast SAT.
Regardless of where I search, I must have a smooth threshold in order to hear the "whispers", so really, the GQ will tell me what settings it likes for a certain area.
Also important to me is showing the REJECT setting due respect as a small increase can block out some goods. However, I am confident that even at 15uS, little gold should be missed. Again, I will always tweak the SAT to get a quieter threshold, before ever going for the REJECT knob.
I have black sands on some beaches over here. I find the GQ cuts through it nicely. There may be a little chatter, but nothing that will block out possible targets. VLF's can be quiet over some black sands, but may not find a gold ring at 1" deep
At all times, I will have some small ground/water noise, it's not much, but I need a little to use as a reference point for good threshold deviation.
Hope some of this information helps. Again, what works for my beach may not be the same for you, and your conditions. I understand some California beaches are pretty tough to work, but remember, you have the best machine to tackle it !

What overall difference in depth between the 8" coil and the 11" coil please .

On a US nickel 3" to 4". It's greater with small gold rings.
Given the option use the 11"
Mr. Bill

Thanks ,hoping to purchase a goldquest ss, in the very near future

New Goldquest SS come standard with the 11" coil.
8" coil is option.
Mr. Bill
