Gonna take a drive to Fort Benning, Georgia tomorrow to .................

I was in the Navy 74-79 and we had M-14's as one of our small arm. I too loved it. We used a .45 X .70 brake over as a line throwing gun. The 45x70 shot gun (as a no batter name to call it then but H & R Long Colt now) would throw a 3/8 x 22 rod with plastic ball 1/8 heavy line over 150 yards.

Then One somewhere with allot brain power decided why do it the old when we had M14'2 with Grenade launcher and a few men on broad that knew have to use , but could use more time with them ( The ship broad Nuclear Guard Force). That is where I came in. With 45x70 you had to shoot at 45 up angle max distances but with M14 and lite weight it would go all the way a smaller ship. We had to to change the way we shoot. NOW We could REALLY AIM and Hit What we Aimed it. Us Gunner's Mate had a point system set up. The M14 would brake thing, knock paint off of walls and really Hurt someone at 150 yards. After 4 Months we went back to 45 x 70. It was Blast while it Lasted.

only one reply, a M-14 because he could trust it and he did as I did

In 74 they made improvements on the M-16 but to late for the guys in the field in 72 and 73.

Sometimes and but not very often Norman I wish I could just play around with what our boys get to shoot today, would love to take those weapons for a ride on the range.

But one thing is for sure, the M-14 and M-60 where solid back in there day and would have no problem picking one up today at 57 if I had to

Thanks for your service Norman :usan:

The M-14 is used by elite forces and the 60 has gone thru some modifications but i'm not currently up on exactly what they are.
Another fine weapon that has stood the test o' time and hasn't changed at all is the Ma Duce. :inlove:

Again, it was the talkin heads that were responsible for it's shortcomings.
What really casued it's problems wasn't the gun design but it was the powder.
The rifle was designed and tested with an ammo using stick powder and it 'ran' jist fine.
The talkin heads butted in and thot they could save a few bucks by usin ball powder instead of the stick in the ammo.
Ball powder burns very very dirty. Couple that with jungle humidity and you have a recipe for a gummed up disaster. Which is exactly what happened. On top o' that some genius thot that the 16 was infalable and needed no or little cleaning.
Troops were not issued cleaning kits :(
The 'geniuses' then decided that by adding a forward assist to the weapon it would solve all the problems. It helped, and is still in use today, but it did not solve the problem.
Eventualy chrome molly was added to the Bbls and the powder was changed.
All they had to do was keep thier damned ignorant fingers out of Ugene's initial design.
If you can git yer hands on one of his original design M-16's today.
You have a true treasure.

Mike tells me that the ARMY is more flexible now and troops get to 'sample' more weapons than we ever did.
The ARMy has a more , learn the SOLDIER'S job next to you, outlook these days.
So far has handled everything from the Berreta 9mm up to the .50.

shortcomings and powder, I never could fire off a full Mag before it jam on me every time, left me wide open for in coming fire, thank god they gave me a M-60 and even though I never had to shoot at somebody with it it sure made me feel safe in training

"Sunshine on the horizon " .. i like that

And yer right, i should o' jumped on it while i was financialy able.
I WILL have me a class 3 weapon before long.

Ever watch Sons of Guns currently runnin on The Discovery Channel on Wed. nights ?
