here are a couple answers.
Yes the battery pod is waterproof. Yes, when plugged in the battery pod bypasses the built in battery so if the internal battery is dead the unit can be powered by the AA batteries in the external pod. I would believe this is also true if the internal battery went bad since when the auxiliary battery is plugged in it completely bypasses the internal battery.

Even if your internal battery is fully charged, by plugging in the auxiliary pod you bypass the internal battery and run off the AA batteries. When the AA's go dead just unplug the pod and you can run off the internal batteries.
Also, the battery pack inside the POD is the same 4 AA pack used in the AT Pro and AT Max. The RNB rechargeable battery for the AT Pro will also work inside the Kruzers battery pod and should give you more than enough time to hunt from sun up to sun down.
