Got a big Silver today!

James N.D.

New member
Finally managed to get a big Silver today. I needed one for this months finds and now I can relax a bit. Today me and Rick(ND) got out for a while and hit the spot where I got the Tokens from on Saturday. Rick ended up finding a Merc, a couple of Wheats, and an older Jefferson Nickel. He was only able to detect for about an Hour and a Half and then he had to get back to open up the bar. I found 2 Silver today. A Walking Liberty Half that was only about 2" deep dated 1945 and a Mercury Dime dated 1938-d. 12 more Wheats also and the dates are 1910,1916-d,1925-s,1929-d,1935-d,1936,1940-d,1944-d,1947-d,1953-d,1953-s, and 1955-d. I also found a neat looking Pendant that might be made out of Silver but doesn't have any markings on it. It is of a Rooster holding up Pistols. Cool looking find! Might go out tomorrow but undecided where and if I am going to. Pic's are below.[attachment 30855 Silver.jpg][attachment 30856 Wheats.jpg][attachment 30857 Pendant.jpg]

Silver Dollars are just too few and far between and that is why I call the Half a big silver. Thanks again and hope you are able to get out and find your share of the loot. Good Luck and HH.

Very nice big silver there James..........:) I just love those walking liberty halves. It's been a while since I have dug one, but they are still out there. Again, have a safe 4th of July. HH.

I was beginning to wonder if they made half dollars in your neck of the woods or maybe the economy didn't support it. I know a lot of areas are devoid of large coins as the people weren't real wealthy. Our area was farming and trade between them.

In the last few years with the Sovereigns and the Explorers I have seen more halves being found then back in the 70s around here it seem. What is odd is most were found in area that have been hit for years. I got a walker 2 weeks ago in a well worked area with the Teknetics T-2 and a Franklin today with the Explorer XS II in the same well worked school yard James got his walker on Monday. What we seem to have a shortage of is silver dollars and gold coins. I have only heard of one gold coin being found since i started detecting back in 1973 and heard of very few silver dollars. I have 3 silver dollars, James now has one or 2 and Tim has 3 I know of while some I know of that been detecting since 1970s have yet to find one.

There are Halves around here but they tend to be a bit hard to find unless you get really lucky. I have plenty of them and the only thin is, is that I am still looking for a '64 Kennedy and a Franklin Half to add to my recovered treasures from detecting. I doubt I would ever find a Capped Bust or a Seated up here either.

Hope you had a great 4th of July and may you have some Good Luck and HH on your next outing to an older site.

I guess i should have left that Franklin for you and you could have left the walker for me you got. Last time we were at the one place down south I get the Franklin you wanted and within 10 minutes you get the walker I wanted, I got to have 10 minutes of glory anyway before you got the walker.
Don't be surprised if you get several Franklin's in one day, just takes that first one, then they come one after another. Took me 3 years to get my first walker, got 4 barber and a franklin, but no walker. Then in the next month got 4 of the walkers.
We are going to have to get out again soon, enjoyed the last few times out with you.

Rick

Just don't quite know what is on for the upcoming weekend but I will let you know buddy. I am happy you got the Franklin Half Rick! You deserve it for all the times you go out and find very little. I talked to Greg at Treasure Island and told him about the 4 Tokens I found and he said they are worth about $20.00 a piece. Then Gary got back to me and said that all 4 Tokens are good ones and he would give me $45.00 in trade towards a Gold Coin. What do you think I should do Rick? Also, I asked Greg about RailRoad Keys and he is unsure of what you have and he said that he would have to take a look at it to see if he is interested in buying it. So you may want to stop in and show him it or give it to me and then I can take it in and show him and see what he will pay for it. Again, Congrat's on the 2nd Half of the month Rick and I will keep in touch.

Sure has been a great detecting season so far and I hope it goes strong into the deep freeze. Thanks for the post!
