got a f5 today...

thanks for all the input when i said i was looking for one... got one slightly used for 298 and 15 shipping.. only thing limiting it is user ignorance. i went over some ground i'd gone over four or five times in the last week or two and found a quarter about five inches down and a cool skeleton key in the first few minutes... the key registered silver but i think it's pewter? had no rust of any kind and is green from being in the dirt.. it was about three inches down.. can't believe the other detector wouldn't see it... anyhow i've got to get used to it and in reading up on it i see there are two software updates.. 61 and 62.. is there any known problems with the 61 version? what's the difference between the two?

and is there suppose to be a soft hiss if the gain and threshold are adjusted properly or is it suppose to be silent? i do know it seems to read quite a bit deeper than the other detector i've got..

It is silent search in Disc mode. You will only hear the threshold hum in the All metal mode.

Skeleton Keys are cool!

As far as I know the only real difference between rev 61 and 62 is that in rev 62 the speaker doesn't pickup circuit noise and you get a more stable threshold hum in all metal mode.

Hope you enjoy your F5 as much as I enjoy mine.

i appreciate the reply..... was a bit concerned at first when it overloaded the first time.. had it cranked up but it cleared when i lifted the detector...it is also very sensitive when used around the handheld bh pinpointer.... raining today so i've nothing to do except read up on it...

first let me say ya got a good detector -it will never stop amazing ya at it ability to locate things others don't.now second and most important-go to search and find everything that Mike Hillis has wrote about this machine.read it bookmark it read it again-if ya can listen to what he tells ya -ya got a chance at learning some of its abilities-the rest is up to you and remember the soil where your at is gonna have different minerals so you'll have to adjust the settings some-but hes probably the smartest F5 user here.congrats on F5 and enjoy it and the finds it locates for ya

but pay attention to them. I've found several nice pocket knifes with the overload. Just lift it up and and resweep. You might try a different frequency and see if that helps with the pinpointer interference. But it might not be the pinpointer. Mine will sometimes chatter away when held still but nice and quiet when sweeping.

well it was raining...so where do you goto look for stuff when it rains?..... a cave? so went to look for a cave... and found one. entrance had several pennies etc... had to crawl for a ways on hands and knees then a little bit a belly action... got to the back and worked our way forward.... lots of beer cans (old steel beer cans) all buried about a foot down... got about a 1/3 the way out and got a low tone... been getting them with beer cans but figured what the heck.. someone had to lose something crawling back in here... dug and found the lid to a skippy peanut butter jar which was attached to the jar wrapped in electrical tape... hmmm.. shook it and something was rattling around in there.... couldn't open the jar so we put it in the bucket and kept looking.. more pennies and a dime... will have to clean them up... got home and opened the jar... used a cement floor which worked well.... inside was a pair of roy orbison style sunglasses, a magnifiying glass, several playing cards taped together, an antler necklace on a leather thong, a note in a pill bottle and a 10k jostens gold class ring from 1962 cystal lake high...., a photograph of a guy in a black leather jacket in front of a swingset and a newspaper clipping...

unfortunately the papers where so damp that unfolding them to read it was nigh impossible... was able to see that it was addressed to dear finder... the middle of the note was unlegible.. and the end which stated it was buried in 1965... ending with a signature of t.m.b.

the newspaper clipping was also unlegible.... figure the guy had to be around 21 when he buried it .. maybe drafted? my history isn't so good.. maybe he buried it to leave something if he didn't make it back from vietnam? anyhow can't figure out what the magnifying glass was for.. kinda think it was to make out the clues on the playing cards etc.. but they got damp and i don't think they will be salvageable....

so .. think i can find someone fom crystal lake high? crystal lake is about an hour and half from here... three high schools are listed.... central, south and a third i've yet to find .. the ring has a big c and a big i on the sides.. anyone else try to research an old class ring? was surprised it was there as it says 10k on the inside and is heavy.. same company made mine.. i think it's jostens....probably mispelled it...

p.s. used the bh for the find... didn't want to beat up the fisher in the cave... guess i should have posted this in the bh forum...sorry...i'll cut and paste it there.. too much typing to start over...

for fisher input.... i am amazed it reads so much better with more depth than the bh.. i'm thinking that cave has more to offer... don't know that i want to bang it around in there though.. and for cave stuff.. lots and lots of those little flint striker... wheels from lighters.. almost as many as beer tabs and if you think they aren't frustrating to find in a dark cave...oh did i mention the bats? complete with bat guano and bats...lol

the foot down for the beer cans was probably more like eight to ten inches.. if they'd been smaller i don't think they'd have registered... sometimes only got a signal from one side and then none for a bit and then back...i mean sheesh it was dark in there..lol

found the owner.... his wife was a few years behind him in school and had taken it off and put it behind a post during gym class or something and it got ripped off.... he has no idea how it got to savanna from crystal lake...

Reading this thread because I wanted to try a new TID machine, I have a F5 on the way. Noticed the initials at the bottom of the note are the same as mine. I can assure you it wasn't me that buried it though. Thanks for all the info.
