Got a few today including a gorgeous Indian head cent

Got out this afternoon after the rain finally stopped. Hit my favorite park for Indian head cents as the sandy soil in very kind to them. Only problem is they are very deep. After about an hour with nothing but some clad and one wheat cent, I finally got a nice, deep good sounding hit. Dug down about 8 inches and retrieved the first of two Indian head cents for the day. About five minutes later I get a similar hit and dug the second Indian head cent. After a hot peroxide bath , a rinse with soap and water and rubbing with a fine cloth both cents came out looking great. The 1902 is one of the nicest I've ever dug and the 1890 isn't too shabby either. Also dug the 1908 V- nickel which has a nice full Liberty (rare to find one not totally wasted) and a nice 1937 Buffalo nickel. Dug one of those darned play dimes today and swear I had a silver 3 center as it was down a good 10 inches !!! Also included a shot of the .925 silver religious medal I found yesterday while taking a friend of the wife's out for her first time metal detecting. She found about $1.50 in clad and was thrilled.

Nice finds Ed...love those Injun's.

I've been trying to find a good way to clean pennies without using the salt/vinegar acid bath method. Do you boil the peroxide of just heat it up to a certain point? And how long do you leave the pennies in there? Thanks !!

I pour about 1/2 inch of peroxide into a small 3" bowl. Heat it in the microwave for 30-35 seconds until it starts bubbling. I then drop the pennies in and watch them bubble for a few minutes. I then take them out of the bowl and hit them with a toothbrush. Reheat the peroxide and put them back in. Sometimes it only takes a few minutes to remove the dirt and turn them a nice brown color. Other times I just let them soak for a few hours and reheat the peroxide again. After the peroxide bath, I put some soap on the toothbrush to get all the peroxide off, rinse in water and then rub with a soft cloth to bring out all the detail. It really doesn't help for the thick, crusty green slim that is rock hard.

Thanks Ed. The soil up this way is punishing to copper. Will give it a try.

Super, ED !

This must be designated "play dime" week:smoke:...cause' I dug one from 9" the other day too...and like you I would have sworn I had my first 3 center:shrug:

Good finds Ed keep em coming. Like to see your finds being were so close to each other only 50 miles apart. I May have to get together sometime this year with you for a hunt or 2. Been out hunting 5 times so far and got 4 silver merc dimes (2 the first time out hunting) and a silver war nickel and skunked one time on one evenings hunt after work. No camera or I would try to do pics too.

Nice finds and those are some pretty Indian heads. That's a beautiful religious medal - must have been for a Navy person. HH
