got a harbor fright tumbler for my clad

Goes4ever

New member
tried it out last night, I did a batch of pennies, about 200 or so, I did not count them...lol

I used gravel, water, and dishwashing soap. I ran them overnight for 6 hours. They do look a lot better and would be accepted anywhere I am sure.

I am trying another batch now, and this time I put in vinegar and salt, gonna run that for 2 hours first, rinse off then add fresh water and soap. I guess I need to experiment with this thing to see what works best.

any other ideas to try?

Have u thought about an ultra soinic cleaner??? I got one for my jewlery and nicer coins and it works pretty good. I have a vibrating tumbler for other metals and such. I got my vibrating tumber at Harbor Freight for about 40.00. Got my ultra sonic one on ebay for about the same w/shipping. Next i want to get one like goes4ever has. Try this link.

yep that is the one I got, the 3lb one, and I made a mistake on my post title...lol

here is a before and after pic of some pennies........this is just a small sampling, these were run for 6 hours with water, gravel and 3 drops of dishwashing liquid, they are a lot more presentable now

Congrats Goes4ever on your tumbler to clean your pennies and clad coins! But don't put pennies in vinegar as they will corrode! I needed one when I had all those clads and pennies to clean for many, many years; but cleaned them by hand and sure kept me busy! It wouldn't be worth me buying one now and what few I find if and when I go :detecting: I can clean like I always have!

Thanks for the info Martha, I know it will help many detectorists in cleaning their coins! :)

God Bless!

why not use vinegar? I ran them in vinegar and salt today and it looks like it cleaned them better. I have them tumbling with fresh water and soap now.

Hi Goes4ever! I don't know about the tumbler, but I was thinking about putting vinegar and salt together for cleaning the clads and pennies will corrode, but I forgot I was using vinegar and baking soda for the pennies and the other together for the coins that weren't valuable! I used baking soda and water paste to clean the black off silver! I haven't cleaned any for so long and Ma Betty forgets too easily! Sorry!

God Bless!

your copper with the other coin! :)
Natural or white fish gravel does a great job!
Don't run any longer than you have to.

on potato chips....though they do have a tendency to rip the flesh off the roof of my mouth.

I bought a tumbler for my wife...she wanted one ever since she was a kid and her cousin had one. Now she has one for about a year or two now and never used it.

my coins have been tumbled and cleaned and looks shiny - better than ever....of course, it may be interesting to note that the cleaned coins are shown to me by the wife as she pulls them from the washing machine and says "they are mine now"

 And Pete how about paper money.....I've found that in the Washing Machine also! Maybe we all should metal detect in it!

God Bless!

Paper money is another matter - its illegal....ever hear of Money Laundering

I was still laughing at the Harbor FRIGHT tumbler while trying to read the rest of this thread.
