Got a little annoyed today

Howdy all and Happy 4th!:usaflag:

So I decided to go to a local tot lot to see if I could pick up a coin or two before heading to the family festivities this afternoon. I'm going along and I get a real solid hit on the $1 mark at 4 inches on my 250. I'm thinking "Sweet"! Problem is I can't pinpoint it. My Ace just gives a very faint tone that doesn't change. I toss a quarter on the ground and I can pinpoint it just fine so I know the detector is working. I'm set on 2 bars sensitivity and I have iron and foil notched out. I decide to dig it anyway. I dig and dig, still getting the strong $1 at 4 inches regardless of which direction I move the coil but no coin. I enlarge the hole wider and wider and I finally start to see metal. It's honestly starting to look like a cast iron pot but I've got iron notched out. To make a long story short, I did not finish digging the target. I dug enough of it that I think it is an old brake drum. What kind of a goof buries a brake drum in a playground?

Now for the real question, why wouldn't I be able to pinpoint the target? I mean no matter what I did, I could only get a very faint tone that wouldn't change.

Thanks,
LW

It could have been a cast iron pipe at a fitting joint . They have lead in them and could resemble a brake drum . De
