Got an itch for pi

thinking of picking up a pi machine to see what's it all about. Hard to justify a new unit since I only get to salt water once or twice a yr. So with that in mind what used or older brand/model would you guys suggest. Sea Hunter II, Surfmaster PI, Fisher Impluse, Sand Shark? Thanks

Out of the ones you picked, it would be the Surfmater PI Pro! also,if you want waterproof. If you don't need waterproof, then a used Beachscan or Goldquest will give best results, but cost more.

P.S. also a Detector Pro Headhunter PI is waterproof, good price, an a Eric Foster design.

I've ordered a new seahunter...I guess i'll let you know in the coming weeks how it does

Zig:
If you're going to use it that seldom, any of those mentioned will do the trick. Probably not so important what you get as it is how you use it. For the couple of times you'll hit the beach, it's probably best to simply hunt with no discrimination and get the most out of depth and dig all targets with the one you choose. You'll have a decent shot at a deep ring and won't get the unit you're really profficient with wet that way (wise). If you buy an original Garrett Sea Hunter XL, it probably has a dead set of batteries, so count on sending it in to Garrett for a $100 buck bill or replacing them yourself (nicads) and voiding warranty for salt intrusion leakage (there's an O-ring seal). The newer SH is drop in alkalines in a seperate compartment. The Whites, Fisher Impulse (a much maligned unit that is good), Sea Hunter MKII, and Sand Shark are all better choices in having a unit ready to go.
Cross (shown actual size) found with a Fisher Impulse and large coil (large & small coils cannot be swapped).

Hey Zig I have a Surf PI Pro and it's a fine machine. The first day out it got the gold.... for that matter the second day too. It's a great machine and easy to use. Sometimes you see one go up for auction on ebay but buying used water detectors makes me nervous. Brand new it's about $650. I just got my new Aquasearch V2 from Mr. Bill a Surfscanner.com and what a machine....unbelievable. But for 2 or 3 times a year it's a fat investment. I go 3 or 4 times a week hunting Spanish treasure I need all the help I can get....but my second choice is definately the PI Pro from Whites. Other guys often ask me why I would ever want to use a PI and dig all that trash.....maybe it's just in my blood.

As you can see from the photo I'm not just a PI freak. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
