Got my 2nd DATED SLQ in 35 years and a SWEET Sterling stickpin I need help ID'ing.:super:

It's been a loooooong while since I have gotten some good hunt time in.

Priorities come first though...and when those priorities are your family...they are NUMBER 1:angel:

I met up with the niterider_58...the Yeti on Friday...and we decided to trek through the Himalayas before the rain screwed everything up on the 4th.

We road tripped and hit 2 different parks I hit in the 80's and 90's...but I had only been there once with the SE.

I knew they were hunted often by other people because of what club members had told me...but I remembered a few "hot" spots that had produced well for me with the cz70pro...so I figured we could squeak a few keepers out with the Explorers.:)

I decided to use the recently acquired EXII today to see how it would do for me...and was very pleased.

I have to be honest though...I HATE the pinpoint feature on it because I'm used to the one on the SE.

I hated it even more once I switched the sunray probe on...and it signaled all over the hole:biggrin:...unlike the pinpoint on the SE that ratchets right in directly nailing the object in the hole.

I can narrow it down to a tiny little clod and pop it out of the hole with the sunray probe and SE pinpoint.

With the sunray probe on the EXII...it's a crapshoot for me at best.

I used to chuckle to myself when I'd see Phil sitting by a hole:smoke:...running little chunks of dirt under the probe:)...then more chunks of dirt under the probe.

I would turn around and look 10 minutes later...and he was still doing the same thing:biggrin:...so I'd walk over with my SE...flip on the sunray probe...hit the SE vco pinpoint...and instantly find it for him so he could see what it was.

Guess what?...now I know what it feels like...'cause I do the same thing:rofl:...and it drives me nuts.

I'll tell you what...put the SE pinpoint feature on the EXII...and I would be in heaven. I do feel the EXII handles iron better than the SE...so I will be using it often.

It's almost a tradeoff though...because I feel hindered by the EXII pinpoint.

Anyway...we both had a great day...and it was cool to take the Yeti to a couple of new sites. Well not "new"...but at least he and I hadn't hit them with explorers. Problem is that it's a long drive and we rarely get to road trip.

We then went to a third park that I have pounded.
I've been telling him for weeks that I was saving one section of the park for him to hunt with his 6 x 8 SEF coil. I gave him my word I had not pounded it yet with a small coil. I hit it with the WOT...the 10 x 12 SEF...then the pro coil...but was saving the small coil pounding for him.:wiggle:

I was confident that he could pop one or two more out with the 6 x 8...and sure enough ..he did.

He popped out 2 silver dimes and I was stoked for him.

One of them I had to really work to get my 10 x 12 SEF coil to hit...so I see exactly why I missed it and walked over it.
I circled the hole and got nothing...but in one little spot...the SEF coil let me know it was there...but only from 1 little tiny angle.
The Yeti sniffed it out with the 6 x 8 though with no problem.

My best find of the day was the SLQ I popped out.

I had pulled out over 100 silver coins from this park over the last 20 years or so...but again...had only hit it once with the SE.

I walked to a spot where I know for a fact I've walked over at least 20 times over the years...and got a warbly chirp.

I stopped to check it out and began to circle the hole.
It hit on only two of the 5 angles I tried it at...but it was a sweet tone with the sweet warble I like...not hollow....and the depth meter was buried.:super:

What was strange... was that the cursor was locking...and I mean locking on the far right edge about 1/2" down from the top. I have not ever had a silver coin do this...not even half dollars...so I was expecting some type of mystery trash.:smoke:

I got down about 9" and saw a silver rim:)...so I started using my fingers to scrape away at it.

Next thing I know...the dirt cake broke loose and out popped a silver quarter with eagle wings on the back...YIPPEE!:clapping:

I did not get my hopes up about a date...but I knew I had found a Standing Liberty Quarter...my favorite coin.:)

It's also a coin that I have found ONLY one of with a date in the last 35 years...seriously...and that was just last year.

Anyway...with trembling hands...I slowly turned it over and rolled the dice. YES...a readable date. Only my second dated SLQ in 35 years.:hot: Not great shape...but sweet enough for me...and a clear 1929 date.

Overall a sweet day... and again...the Yeti and I BOTH did well. He ended up with 4 silver...and handfuill of wheats...some trinkets...etc.

I ended up with 5 silver...2 Injuns'...a Chinese coin?..some wheaties...etc.

I also found a SWEET little sterling silver stick pin and if anyone can identify it in any way.,..I would really appreciate it.:)

Also any info on the Chinese coin...or whatever it is?..would be appreciated as well.

Take care...have a nice, safe 4th...and good luck on your next hunt.:wiggle:

Very nice finds on those relics.....Johnnyl is a great resource for help on ID'ing whatzit relics....he checks in on the Whatzit forum. Please post some more pics of those relics once you get them cleaned up! Happy 4th!

WTG Bryce.:clapping: Those SLQ seem to be few and far between and in most cases the dates are worn off. It's nice to find one and even better to find one with a date. I have three in my collection and two out of the three do have dates. I'm slowly on the mend and hope to get out soon. Again, nice finds Bryce and best of luck on your next outing. HH.

Eddie

Thanks Eddie. The SLQ is my favorite coin.

I'm glad you are doing well my friend. Get plenty of rest and let your strength come back on it's own as best as you can.

You will know when you are ready to hunt again.

Take care

Thanks Erik. A couple of the relics are already cleaned up:detecting:

I was afraid to clean the Chinese coin...or whatever the heck it is:biggrin:

The sterling pin is a clean as I can get it...and the little badge/medallion thingy on the right is too:cool:

Not sure what the pointed thing is that resembles a key??...but I didn't clean it at all...thinking it's just junk.

Take care....and have a safe 4th. it's a wet one here....poured all day...and everything has been canceled this evening.

Hi, At first I thought that "Chinese looking coin" think was a Chinese cash coin (that sounds redundant, doesn't it ), but I don't think it is. Looks like our alphabet on it.....can you put a little soap and water on it and re-scan? Looks like it might be some sort of token.

The pointy key thing is cool looking too -- definitely looks old -- I'd consider it a whatit older relic and not junk. I like these relics the best as they have quite a story to tell. The silver pin is cool.....maybe Johhnyl can shed some light.....too bad about the rain, first day in a while it hasn't rained here, but couldn't find the time to get out today  Again, nice set of finds!

Congrats on the 1929 SLQ Bryce.
Seems like some folks have better luck
finding SLQ's with dates than other folks do!!
But we keep trying.... Good finds buddie!!

Now that you're showing the other side of it. I'm sure that someone here will be able to confirm it. Nice find....I myself have never found one of these yet. Where did it hit?

Are you still digging lower conductors? I'm like you I can't stand digging tons and tons of junk, but I may try what you did to see what I get during a day. I did clean all targets out of a 10' x 10' area once in an older parks and found some interesting items, but it was a lot of work. Maybe I can hire someone to dig for me!

Thanks....It hit between a low injun' and a wheatie...a bouncer ...and the cursor fluttered like an injun' hit.

As for diggin' lower conductors all day....nope...I'll never do that again:smoke:

I hunted the only true way I know how to hunt...and that's concentrating on injun' hits on up:cool:

Just about where pulltabs stop is about where I start paying attention.

Take care

Thanks a bunch G.N.

They are tough to find for some reason. I know guys who have 1 or 2 dated ones per year...and others like myself:cool: who never find them unless they are worn.

Worn...no date...it doesn't matter. I love to find them...but to get dated SLQ #2 after 35 years was a thrill.

Take care G.N.

My guess is that coin is an EMPIRE general cast coinage from china. One of the symbles represents the composition of the coin, in this case i think it brass and one is the date, and one represents possibly the Emperor. Nice bunch of silver. Ive found 3 SLQ this year two were almost ment condition with the same date. But you find a lot more of that old silver than if like to be finding.

Congratulations Bryce on the SLQ that is one I want pretty bad can't wait hope if I do it has a date also they are a hard one too get for some reason anyway nice find bud and Happy 4th hope you have a good one!

I know just how you feel. I was dumbfounded when I pulled mine out. It was on edge and by iron so retrieval was tricky. Yours is quite nice looking with a very clear date. They are beautiful coins and I'm surprised we don't find more.

I had a EXII briefly before I got my SE and that was my complaint about it - the pinpointing was a bear to use. Some people claim to have no trouble with it but it gave me fits so I traded up to a SE and never looked back. Great finds Bryce. I like the silver pin - very unusual find.
