Got my 2nd Silver dime Grand Slam this year:thumbup:

I decided to go back to a park I did well at last time and hunt the very spot that everyone else seemed to have given up on.

It is a nice big strip by a bunch of old buildings but there is iron and junk everywhere because my SE is pretty much in a constant null. Not good??...maybe not...but my SE was able to pull a seated dime...roosey...merc...and barber through the silence for me....and I know this place is pounded on a weekly basis.

I see people every time I come here...but nobody wants to fight "nullsville". Guess what?...that's exactly where I want to head...where everyone else has gotten frustrated at and given up on.:)

This is MY kind of place!:clapping:I leave the SE at IM-22 and semi auto sensitivity 26...cause that's the sweet spot of settings that I feel enables me to pick some sweeties out of the iron nulls....and goes plenty deeeep:super:

I got started on a rare full day of hunt time...and it was nearly an hour before I even bent over to dig my first target.

It was worth the wait though...because out of the nulls came a thin worn out silver disk.:) I won't bore you with the details of the sound...cursor movement...and pinpoint ID help...but let's just say it was a strange signal to say the least. I was honestly expecting an injun' from the sound...but I'll take silver.

I was able to make out the outline of a worn out old seated lady. SWEET...first silver coin is my second seated dime in 2 weeks and it came from 10" down.:)

Pressure was now off...and the rest of the hunt was just for fun.

It was nearly 2 hours later until I got my second weirdo hit in nullsville...which turned out to be a Roosey from about 7" in a bunch of water soaked gravel.

By now the drizzle had picked up and the holes I was digging in this mucky gravel...were filling up with water as quick as I could scoop some of the gravel out of the way.

I got a very strange hit which sounded like a bunch of mumbo jumbo...but every now and then I would swear I could hear a nice "warbly" higher tone mixed in there.

I called over the feller' hunting with me and told him what I thought. He agreed...about 1 of every 4 passes with the coil brought a sweet sound up through the mumbo jumbo of sounds.:)
Now keep in mind that what I was hearing was coming through a dead null.

I decided to give it a shot and dug down in the wet gray gravel muck.
I was amazed when a sweet merc came out of the swampy pile next to the hole.:beers:
It probably wasn't more than 7" deep...but I bet it had been walked over 100 times before because of the iron and junk everywhere....and the fact that the machine nulled everywhere.:)

In the back of my mind I knew all I needed for the slam was a Barber dime...but I tried not to think about it. If I dwell on it too much...I let it get to me and it throws me off my game.

I went to a spot that I had already walked over earlier...but I hit it from the exact opposite angle this time hoping to pop out another keeper.

Before long I was able to squeeze another signal out of the nulls and was amazed at how I had missed it the first time.
It did not sound like silver...but I knew it was a coin mixed in with the trash.

Dug down about 9" and was shocked when a silver coin popped out. Picked it up and was thrilled to see a barber dime. I couldn't make out the date, but my friend confirmed it was a 1901.:jump:

This is a first for me...getting 2 dime grand slams in one year.

Again I'll say it....what a wonderful hobby.:wiggle:

Very nice slam Bryce.:clapping: That is one that has eluded me. Got them all but the seated. Got a club hunt this Sat, but the finds won't be as good as yours. Just getting out again will be good and the rain is suppose to let up for Sat. Nice finds again. HH.

You guys just may be be the "Hunters of The Year"........... What do you think everyone..???????

I got lucky with a seated/Barber pocket spill...so it lightened the load a little.

Earlier this year I actually found 2 seated dimes a barber and a roosey in the same hunt...but Guvner put the screws to me and my slam:biggrin: by pulling the merc I desperately needed...about 10 feet away from me:cool:

The Yeti also punked me at the beginning of the season after I had found a merc, barber, and roosey....by finding a seated a few feet away from me.:)

Hey Elton, maybe your on to something........a nomination for best hunter of the year, best coin, etc. We don't have to have a crown and cape for the lucky winner but maybe a donated metal detector from the makers would be nice. I nominate myself right off and maybe Bryce next. I'm sure others might have a different opinion.:smoke::

 im sorry yeti but that must of been funny too watch lol you two made some really sweet finds well done my friends

Wow, Bryce, just awesome! Sounds like you guys had a blast and made the best of the day, rain and all.

I know that the SE and EXII are quite different in IM settings and VDI numbers. But does anyone know if the sensitivity settings are the same? I'm pleased and encouraged to learn that the explorers can still find deep coins through a null. I knew they'd find shallow stuff, but always believed that if you were in a null the deepies wouldn't even give off a peep.

This will make it a lot easier to slow down and really pound some of those frustrating sites.

Chris...not sure what you mean by doubles matches.

Of the two times I came close earlier this year ...the first hunt I found 2 seated...a roosey...and a barber in one hunt....but couldn't find the merc I needed for the slam.

The second time I came close was when I found a merc...a barber...and the roosey in a hunt ...but couldn't find the seated I needed for that slam.

I just missed two more slams by one coin each hunt.

I remember the hunt with Guvner...I was actually hoping for a mercury dime I needed on my last dig...but a seated dime popped out instead. No I didn't get that slam...but I won't complain that the merc I was hoping for ended up being a second seated dime.:)

I did find a silver slam earlier in the year...but not a dime grand slam. In that hunt I found a washington quarter...2 roosies...a barber dime...and a merc. While it was a silver grand slam...it wasn't the silver dime grand slam:cool:

Dime Slam! Man that is impressive! :yo:

Bryce, do you know if the xs is capable of pulling silver from the null like that? I've been running my sensitivity on 22-26 auto, and IM -6 mostly sometimes less disc. I have a place that I think it will work great but I'm not sure on the IM setting. I tried hunting it a little but I only got some chirping here and there.

Great hunt and awesome haul for You both! I bet Yeti still isn't laughing about the hickory nut though!:stars:

Thanks buddy. I truthfully don't know how the XS handles nulling. I know I feel the EX2 is even better in iron than my SE...but I LOVE the pinpoint feature on the SE.

I am also not familiar with IM settings on the XS...but I know IM -6 on the EX2 was the same as the -22 setting I run on the SE.

Thanks Bryce, sorry about the thread Hijack, but I appreciate the help!:beers:

with that EX2...it should let you hear coins through the nulling.

I LOVED my EX2...but LOVE the pinpoint feature on the SE even more. In my opinion...the EX2 actually handles iron better than my SE does...but NO way I'm giving up my pinpoint feature.

I set up my EX2 the exact same way I do my SE...and if I was going slow enough...I could hit deep silver or injuns while it was nulling.

On my SE I run conductive sounds...sensitivity semi auto 26...gain 10...limits 10...variability 10...max limits 10...threshold barely audible...fast OFF...Deep OFF..and Iron mask at -22

You can also use manual sensitivity if you feel comfortable with it. I personally prefer the semi auto mode for my hunting style because I feel it settles down the SE down and falses and chirps less...which allows me to concentrate better on the chirps I might be hearing over deep coins.

Only difference in settings from my EX2 to my SE is that iron mask at -6 is the same as Iron mask -22 on the SE.

I will not lie to you and tell you it is easy to do right off the bat...but with just a little practice...you can learn to hear those faint or deep chirps a coin gives off through a null. Once you investigate them and learn from them...you will hopefully begin to find some stuff in the iron.

Just ask Elton....he has been really doing well and has been putting in the necessary hours in the field to learn what the machine is telling him.

The Guv or the Yeti found the coin you needed for the slam. Two single slams and two assisted.

Tried for humor but missed.

Are you guys getting lots or rain down there? I might head to Illinois and try hunting some of the relative's farms.

Chris

We are getting pounded with rain right now. It was nice Monday and Tuesday...and part of Wednesday.

Today though...it's been pouring...and is supposed to continue through the weekend from what I've heard.

Not sure what it's supposed to do beyond that time frame...and I hope they are wrong about the weekend too:)

Take care

Congrats on the grand slam again Bryce!!
You DO have the touch for those little chirps
that end up being a silver coin. Gold Nuggets :wiggle:

And here I am just Hoping I can pull a Barber before the snow flies. I don't hold a lot of hope for a Seated in Eastern Washington. They should be here though, probably not lots of 'em. Maybe I should consider pairing an Explorer up with my X Terra.

Nice Score
Jeff
