Got to use a Golden Today and have Questions

Fellow club member has one so we went to a heavily hunted park for me to swing his old tone unit. He has put O rings under all but the Sens/On knob so knobs don't move around. Desc just below arrow, and notch knob at 9:00. Narrow/Wide in middle so no notch on. It would overload on quarters and would have to lift coil up a couple inches to stop it. Is that normal? I cut sens down and still did it. I wanted to move notch knob up to 10:30 but he ask that I didn't. I would throw switch to narrow or wide to check target. I still think at this setting I would dig more trash and did. Granted new to machine but he would check them with ETrac to see what it saw. I can see why new tones may be easier as it was a little difficult to tell between the 2 middle tones. Guess I could get used to it and tell difference. He has had his over 3 years and so second nature to him. Do like the Golden but concerned about overload sound. Any help on this?
 
I got the new tone and mine has done this when a metal object is to close to the coil.The old tone version can be sent in for the new tone upgrade.This information is on the Tesoro site,listed with the golden.It is a small fee to get done.I use the notch switch all the time while coin hunting.If jewelry hunting i would then leave it off. :p
 
I would expect it to overload on a larger piece of metal like a can or large piece of slaw but not a quarter. Wondering if friends unit has a problem. He has had it since they first came out. If I could get one less than 449 then I would have no problem with the 50+freight for tone change. Only ones I can find are old tone and due to the scarcity of these no one wants to give break. Going to hold on to AT for awhile till new version comes out if it ever does. Been out of production for awhile and with one of their major engineers gone who can say when they will be released. Now have cash available to get one if used unit should appear.
 
My Golden overloads on quarters directly under the coil at a depth of 1" or less. Surface pennies, too.

I doesn't bother me at all. At that point you are 90% likely to have a shallow quarter or the top/bottom of a can. In places with a lot of coins, you actually come to like hearing that high-tone/overload/double-beep sound - it is 25 times better than a penny :)

FWIW, at the suggestion of several more experienced forum members, I run my sensitivity at 7 or 8 most of the time. Seems like I dig less trash and more/deeper good stuff. I have been using the brown round 8" and the stock 9x8" with good results. The old brown round seems to pinpoint a bit crisper (and I suspect that it has a more narrow/sharp search field as a result) and otherwise they seem to get the same depth.

I have brand new Golden with new tones. I have about 10 hours on the unit so I am no expert by any measure. But my unit has not overloaded with a coin yet. I even took a penny and put it through the opening in the coil to see if it would overload. I will try a quarter tonight and let you know if I can get unit to overload. I usually run Sens at 10 but if I get a faint signal I will turn it into the red/orange and see if I can get better signal. So far it has worked about 75-80% of time. Usually a 6 inch deep penny or dime. Anytime I get overload sound I lift coil to see what sound comes. My short experience has determined overload to usually be a shallow pop can or aluminum siding piece(various sizes) from a home or other junk. It has yet to be a coin The comments about this not being a deep detector in previous threads are acurate. But I feel that to be a good thing. I do not have to dig to China to find a can at the bottom of the hole (thinking it was a deep quarter). I love the lightweight and the notch option. So far I am please with the overall performance. I would like a little more depth. And even after watching 53Silver video multiple times I still can not get the gold rings to hit when i notch out pull tab. I have 5-6 mens gold rings that I use. any suggestions would be great.

You may be aware of it, but it is worth mentioning that as you increase discrimination, you lose depth. I was running my discrimination just above tabs and later discovered that I was burning away 2" to 2.5" of depth. With the Golden, you can drop discrimination all the way down to just above iron and let the tones guide you while getting deeper targets. What would be difficult with a single tone machine becomes fairly easy with the multiple tones of the Golden. The discrim dial is just a way to cheat yourself with this machine...

I run minimum discrimination with no notch and get good depth. Use a Gatorade sport's foil cap as a gauge. With the notch width control switch in the off position, adjust the notch width control knob to the point where the foil cap is just breaking into to iron tone. The Golden really is a great detector for those who take the time to learn it. It's not that hard to learn. Just throw a bunch of different targets on the ground and practice with different settings until it you get it.

Using the notch feature until you get used to the tones is helpful.

The Golden is the best gold ring finder on the market if you take the time learn how to use it. It's good for coin shooting as well.

Excellent tips Topdecker and Tabman. I will keep trying. I have been running with disc at the black arrow between iron and nickle. I will turn it all the way off/down tonight. I will also try the notch suggestions. Like I said, I am still way new at this machine. Just giving my first impressions. I am getting more confident with target ID every time I use it. I absolutley love the tones. And trust me I am giving 100% effort into learning the Golden (at least 6 months) before I jump to conclusions. I will give a thourough feedback at my 6 month mark along with find log.
 
I have found that ANY Tesoro without g/b really shines when the discrimination is the lowest. I like running the Compadre at just where the small iron nail "clips" the signal. I've often wanted to try a Golden set like this. Maybe I'll get as lucky as you to try one.
 
Important to know about the golden.In old highly trasy areas i could stand in one little spot and hit deep coins by listening for faint hi switch to low signals.If you hear a small hi-low, faint signal,there is a good deep target down there most likely.I could here deep coins that was harder to hear with my single tone detector.There are some old golden users that will come on here that have hunted for over thirty years and will swear that the golden is the best cherry picking coin shooting detector out there. O:)
