GPX-4000 VS EXPLORER 11 SE:starwars:

Hi,
Well, since I've been using my GP series for coins and jewelry as well as nuggets I'd put it like this. If you want sheer depth, and so not mind digging everything, the GPX-4000 will blow away an Explorer SE. If you want great discrimination and some of the best depth for a VLF go for the Explorer SE.
Got a few hours in with the GPX-4000 yesterday doing some nugget detecting and general detecting. Got no nuggets but did get a 1936 Buffalo nickel, 64 dime, and 56 penny and a toe ring. The area I hunted is cleaned out by VLFs so I rarely find new coins. Just the old ones the VLFs, including Explorers with WOT coils, cannot reach. It is an old freshwater beach area so digging holes over a foot deep for coins is OK. I do dig quite a few junk items however. Such is the price you pay for raw power.
You specifically asked which would be the "better all around unit". I think that would be the Explorer SE for sure.

It sounds like you want a detector to capably hunt for gold, and for coin/jewel/relic. An allrounder also means a detector that is capable of handling high junk areas, varying ground conditions, and beach work.
The GPX4000 can only be used for hard core gold detecting on mineralized ground, beach work-some beaches but not all, and lighly junked 'dig it all' coin/relic hunting, and only then in areas where interference allows you to work it.
The Explorer is at home at the beach, and in lightly junked areas, but useless on the goldfields, and acts like a pig anywhere else more often than not.
If you have the money for a GPX4000 and plan to use a detector a lot for gold, but need more from a detector than just that, then from a money and sense perspective, a new 2100v2 an XTerra70 (one of the best allrounders on the market) and a Musketeer plus every accessory known to mankind could be bought for the same money.
Makes sense to me, and you will not be leaving much, if anything, behind you for the GPX user.
I have only listed Minelabs for two reasons, firstly because you mentioned them, and secondly because they make the best detectors.

There is no such thing as an ALL - AROUND machine that is the best at finding nuggets at depth and great discrimination and depth for coins. The only answer is to have a GREAT gold nugget machine, and also a GREAT coin an relic machine.
You can have both, for the price of a GPX4000, in fact for less than the price of a GPX. 4000.
Buy yourself a new SD2200dV2. After all these years, and all of these advancements, you are still going to find people using the SD2200d, myself included. I just sold one to a gentleman yesterday. There are still people using the SD2100 which is even less expensive, and they love that machine. The beauty of the SD2100 and SD2200 is that they use all of the coils that the GPX4000 does which gives you about 35 different coils to choose from.
NOW buy yourself a new Minelab Sovereign coin machine. To me, the Sovereign is still the coin machine of choice when you want depth, and discrimination and simplicity. NO graphic diplays, just a numercial display, if the number is positive dig it, if it's negative it's ferrous junk.
Here's the thing to remember. If you go running with the big boys to go nugget hunting with a SD2200, and they are using their GP3000's GP3500's GPX4000's at the end of the day, you stand just as good of a chance at having as much if not more gold than anyone else.
If you are out coin hunting with people who have their Explorers and Quatros, once again, in my opinion, you have just as good a chance of finding all of the same stuff they will by using a Sovereign.
This is a plan to put you into two top rated machines that will really be the best for what you want to do.
