When I try reverse descrimination on my GQ by increasing the reject adjustment I get an loud blast in the headphones and then things settle down again. Is there a way to minimise this effect.

Not Eric, but perhaps this will help.
The unit was not designed to do as such, but the so called reverse discrimination, (for the lack of any other description), was a added bonus that came out of the circuit design. One would have to install additional circuitry to adjust for the momentary audio increase when spinning the reject pot in reverse.
What you can do is set the threshold so that you can just about hear it. The response won
 
Grey Ghost earphones to that have a "limiter/dampner" built into them to lessen that affect you are discussing. Also as a bonus side effect of the more sensitive earphone my Goldquest SS is deeper in use. Frank
 
A pair of Gray Ghost phones with the limiter would help a lot.
 
Try turning the knob whilst the detector is still picking up audio from the target.
