I've been asked by a farmer to find a 6" to 8" diameter steel pipe that runs under a tarmac roadway. It's about 18" to 24" down. I'm going to try my GQSS. Don't know what to expect. Has anyone done such before. I'd welcome any useful ideas. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">
 
Hi Mrlownotes,
Some portable PI detectors are made for just this type of application. The GQSS should have no problem locating that size of pipe at the depth you stated. Obviously listen for a long and fairly wide signal. May be a good idea to turn the reject control to half way, as you are not look for something small. Once you have found a likely signal, turn the threshold back into the silent region to get sharper pinpointing. Maximum signal is right over the top of the pipe. Depending on the stone used in the tarmac, you may get a bit of signal from that. However, for a target of that size you can search with the coil 4 - 6in off the ground if need be.

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I have the 'massaged' GQSS with 'range' control - (Cambs). Will set that to Max. I won't have to any digging this time.
 
I had a crew working my condo parking lot and they had a high price pipe finder detector and had no luck- I took my excalibur down there, no discrimination, and they gave me 10 bucks per washout - 20 minutes and $80 later they left, hahaha! If my excal can do it I'm SURE the Goldquest can!
 
Pipe found. The approximate location was known within about 30 feet. It turned out the pipe was shorter than remembered, hence they couldn't find the ends of it either side of the roadway. Resurfacing of the road had widened it. The depth turned out to be approx 16" to 18" at the top of the pipes. The GQSS found it within moments, with a belter of a signal, even with threshold turned down to silent for finer pinpointing, with a target width of 18". Pipe was of 1/2" steel with diameter of approx 8". The instant success prompted the farmer to request finding another one a 1/4 mile down the road. We found it within minutes.
