Hi Eric,
Buzz sent me three rocks at my request so I could experiment with them to see if a DD coil would help his problem.
With a mono coil, the rocks produce a signal that is very loud and sharp, much like an iron object, when the PI is set with a short delay. If the delay is extended out quite a ways, maybe 40 usec to 50 usec, the signal almost disappears.
With a DD coil, the rocks display somewhat similar iron characteristics also. If the coil is close to the rocks, the rock will give a negative response when passed across the overlap zone, much like iron does when the delay is short. However, raising the DD coil a little to a distance of maybe 3", causes the signal from the rock to almost disappear.
The rocks are not overly heavy and are just slightly magnetic. When looking at the three I have, two almost appear to have a reddish or almost rust colored coating, similar to oxidized iron. One of these rocks has a fresh break. The interior of that rock is more of a dark grayish interior.
The third rock is a little larger and a little thicker. It also has reddish or rust colored blotches on it.
In summary, they do react differently than any other rock I have encountered before.
