Great Saturday!... :super: Sunday, not so hot: sad:

small change

New member
I'd called a friend of mine earlier last week to see if he wanted to get a couple of hours hunting somewhere nearby after work. He said that he couldn't that night (busy) but asked me if I wanted to go to hunt a boy scout camp Saturday. I said of course! It turns out one of his sons is the head ranger there (lives on site). We got up there around 9:30 or so & started out searching a rather large field with a small shelter at one end where apparently quite a few activities take place. (Maybe some camping, too, --not sure about that). We spent 2-3 hours but could only come up with clad & the ground was that bad clay that most of us dislike digging in. Decided to go to lunch & then when we returned we decided to go up to another area where an archery range is. His son suggested we could try that area & thought it may be older. We started out just finding some clad & then I found the novelty coin.

It's the same front & back. Note it says "Never Fail", however, as you can see in the left photo, I already "failed" when I decided to put a nice big scratch across it. I guess I was picking it up with the side of the probe near the tip & not where I had the probe tip it obviously wasn't where I thought it was.

Anyway after that, I did find a wheat cent & not long after the wheat, the first silver was one of the 1920 Mercs. 2nd was the '43 Quarter, followed by the Barber Dime (1903 O) (not sure how I scratched that since I never felt the knife scrape against anything), three more Mercs & then the '34 Quarter. Some were 6-7" deep, the Barber was only about 5", may have been at an angle or on edge since it sounded deeper than it was. One of the Mercs was only 2" deep & thought it was just another clad dime. My friend did end up finding a '43 Quarter & a '57 Roosevelt Dime. I was glad he at least got a could of silvers. I would have felt bad if he had got skunked & I found all of them since he was nice enough to invite me along. I had seven silver coins by the time we left early that evening but ended up with only 3 wheats, which I thought was odd. I did find a '46 & a '57 Jeff Nickel but no Buffalo's or V's. If we had hunted at that field all day, I might have had 10 or 12 silver coins. I'm sure there are more left since I don't think we even covered half of the possible area to cover. Hopefully we can get back there soon but it may not be for a while since we can only get in there on the weekends when no activities are going on.

Sunday, went & tried a couple of St. Louis City Parks but failed to find any silver coins. All I could manage was 2-3 wheats & a small amount of clad. I left the lucky coin at home Sunday, so maybe I should have brought it with me. Maybe if I do that from now on, I "will never fail" to find at least one silver coin each trip out.

Take care & HH

Dan.

Hi Dan, that is a nice collection of silver. You may want to consider mounting the lucky coin on your Explorer so you never leave home without it. HH

WOW Dan :yikes: no wonder you didn't find silver Sunday you found it all Saturday, nice sliver ::thumbup:
