anyone have any experience with this detector? i bought one off the classifieds and was wondering how good of a coin hunter it was. what kind of depth can i expect out of it in good soil? ........thanks............roger
I have a gta 1000 also and have had it for at least 10 years. I do a lot of tot lot hunting and i do very well with this machine. you can do a search by my name and you can see some of the things i have found so far this year. i can also say that i have paid for my detector about 10 times over. as far as depth goes,i get about 6 inches and more with the right soil condition,(sand, wet soil, wood chips. if i use the bigger coil i get about 8-10 inches with the same soil conditions but i also hunt in all metals a lot. I find i do a lot more digging but i do find a lot more good targets this way.
very impressive finds! it seems the gta 1000 is no slouch in finding treasures. i haven't got my gta 1000 yet, should be here very soon. i have a gta 350 that works ok, seems the depth isn't great but it works good finding modern coins that aren't too deep and locks on with an accurate id. thanks for the info on the gta 1000. good hunting.........roger
I have had mine since 1994. Great little machine.
I mostly coinshoot, and am not really interested in depth, per-se.
I have a personal rule that Any items I find of historical value, I return to the land owner.
This includes old coins. Sometimes they let me keep them, but mostly I give them up.
I don't collect, but have permission to a lot of places then no-one else has. This is important, as I live in Texas, where 98% of the land is privately owned.
It's a dandy detector. Not long ago it was Garrett's top machine. Hope you got the one with "Power Master". If so depth will be good. If not it will just be average.
Oh yeah! Great machine! I had one for a few years back in the nineties, but I gave it up (regretfully) when I upgraded to GTI 2500. Wish I still had that baby, though. Sweet machine. Don't get me wrong. I love my GTI 2500. Just wish I would've kept that GTA 1000. Best of luck to ya'. You'll love it! Happy Hunting!
thanks for the info on the gta 1000 guys. i'm not sure if it is the power master series or not. will it say power master on the detector ? how do i know which machine it is?
thanks and happy hunting.........roger
I don't have the power master version, just the regular and I still do very well with my machine. Just look at todays finds. You will love this detector. good hunting and look forward to seeing your finds.
I have a very old GTA 1000 and have not used it in many years but now I have more time to get back into the metal detecting hobby. My question is the GTA 1000 still a good enough metal detector for the beach in its stock mode or 1. can I get a differant coil to make it better. 2 should I trade up. I did Civil War stuff with it years ago and I felt it did very good and I found a lot of musket balls and general civil war stuff and lots of old coins. However I know there have been many improvements over the 10 to 12 years I have had this one. Are they worth the differance to trade up to.
Thanks
Dave
