I recently bought a used GTA1000, sent it in to Garrett to be checked over and have used it once since receiving it back. In looking through the Garrett Forum, I don't see any conversations on the GTA1000. What's anyone's experience with this machine, and how can I tell where the center of the signal is, under the Coil? BTW, while using it the sound went dead on the machine.

Most of the people here have moved up to newer equipment. The GTA 1000 is a great machine. It is a great coin hunter. A lot of people who bought theirs years ago still have it and use it for a back up. A later model, GTAx 1000 came out after the GTA model, which had Power Master circuitry...giving it an extra 20% depth. This same feature is found today in the GTI 1500, GTI 2500 & GTP 1350 as a standard feature.

To find the target under the coil, push and hold the pinpoint mode. The audio response is loudest, when centered over the target, which should be the center of the coil.

There aren't many conversations because it is old technology and no longer in production. The 1000 is a good machine and many users still own one.

To pinpoint scan side to side until you get the loudest reponse, stop and move the coil forward and backwards until you get the loudest response. Watch the cursors at the top of the screen ( signal strength ) and when they line up all the way across, the target is centered and under the center of the coil.

there were two different coils that came with the gta 1000.the original was an oval shape that you had to use the heel toe method.too many people complained so Garrett put the round eight inch crossfire coil on the latter models.there is an x in the middle of the coil do what willy and john say and the target is under the x.

Good detector ! That was my first Garrett detector and I found a ton of stuff with it. You'll have fun with it.Pinpoint just as Bill and John said and keep your eye's on that X then when you move the coil to dig you'll be right there.

Got the 10 1/4" (?) Hot Head coil besides the 5 x 10 double D. The HH coil gets a pretty strong beep on my 6" deep recently planted nickel & dime, with ID varying, but not as low as iron, mostly staying near the middle. I think if you press the pinpoint more than once you can get a smaller beep, but the beep of a round object will still be greater front to back than side to side.

The are several different coils you can buy on eBay, I think all the others are round & will say Crossfire (not Crossfire II) on them. And the Hot Head says GTA on it.

When you said the sound went dead while using the machine (& after getting it back from Garrett) do you mean the threshold tone went to silent? These older detectors may do that shortly (drift) after being turned on, but if it did it after using it for awhile I might think that odd. Did you try resetting it for threshold tone & did it then stay on? Hope it works OK. HH, George (MN)
