GTAx550

Just bought a new GTAx550. Are there many others out there using this model. I've only had time to hunt for a couple of hours in a church lot with a ball field. So far have found a clad dime and 5 pennies. Would like to hear from others using this model.

bought my gtax550 about 10 years ago still works great to this day, have'nt used it for awhile... use my other two detectors gti2500, and minelab explorer se pro.
have found alot of good things with the 550. use it at the beach in the dry sand and at parks :beers: my coil is the solid white coil.

I've had one for about 4 years now. Planning on adding a sniper coil this year. Have found a lot of coins and relics with it.

My first detector was the GTAx550, I got it last may. I recently purchased an AT Pro, but have yet to use it (waiting for spring). My first hunting season with the 550 was amazing, I found so much great stuff with it. I found 1300 coins, 54 silver coins (including 3 Barber halves and a Morgan silver dollar), some Indian head pennies, many wheat pennies, 7 silver rings, and a solid gold 2-piece cuff link.

I'm SO GLAD that the 550 was my first detector. It is quite easy to learn, took me 30 or 40 hours to figure out what I was doing and what to listen for. It goes fairly deep, and the pinpointing is really good. The only problem I had was that I wore out the pinpoint button and had to have the screen replaced. (I now have a ProPointer, so that should save some wear and tear on the pinpoint button).

The 550 was my first detector, so naturally I have a soft spot for it, but I do think it's a great machine regardless! I ordered the AT Pro because I'm interested in the iron audio, the places I usually hunt have a lot of iron to work through. BUT I will always keep my 550, I think it's a good detector.

You were smart to order a Garrett!

My 550 was my first Garrett, and since the aren't making them anymore, I'll never get rid of it. I use my 2500 most times now, but want to get a sniper for the 550. Have a lot of places that will come in handy.

This is my go to machine that I use all the time. It's a great machine but just like anything it takes a while to learn it. The GTAx550 pic's up coins quite well and hits on silver up to a respectible depth of 7"-8". This is a great machine and very user friendly so you'll have many good hours spent with it. A suggestion thou use a pair of head phones as it will give your batteries longer life span the worst thing to happen on a hunt it for your batteries to die and you don't have back up's this usually happens when your at quite a ways from home in a good location.

Funny. I was out in my backyard showing a friend of mine my new toy. Ran him thru my "test area" and then was just clowning walking back to the house when I got the beep that I already know is a coin. Went in the house to get my digging tool and proceeded to dig up the penny I was sure was there. There were two dimes and three pennies in the hole and two more pennies just inches away. I may have a new convert.

Found another quarter, two clad dimes and a penny today

Have now found a total of 29 clad coins with a value of $1.20. Not alot of value but I have yet to hunt any sweet places yet. And by the way digging up lost coins is really cool. Added a Lesche digger and it is the bomb!

Have now found 34 coins with a face value of $ 1.58, a hot wheel car and another small toy car. Not a lot but I have not had a chance to really take it out of the neighborhood. Can't wait to get out and about.

Have now been hunting with the 550 for 2 weeks now. Only had a chance to use it in newer locations such as public parks and a couple of yards. Have found 51 coins, with a face value of $3.46. Have added gloves after getting nicked while breaking up a plug. Still wondering why it took me 28 years to rediscover this great hobby.

Alright!:super:Sounds like it's goin' great!:thumbup:Glad to see that you're getting back into the "swing" of things:detecting:Happy Hunting!:)

Have been having a great time so far. Am currently hunting the grass area's of a closed school. Didn't really expect to find much but have found 2 quarters, one a "state", four dimes and 2 pennies. Have only covered maybe a 20th of the total ground and have not yet been in the area where the play equipment was at. Basically started on one side and sweeping a strip at a time. I figure it will take weeks of evenings with maybe some weekend time thrown in. The school and area date from the early 30's so silver and wheaties are a possibility there. My sister has also agreed to let me scan her place as well. She live in a house that was built in 1917. They own the 2 lots next to them as well and the bro-in-law told me that one of them had a neighborhood store on it many years ago. It will take many hours to properly search this ground as well. I'm so looking forward to warm weather.:detecting:
