GTI1500 Help

oldranger

New member
I recently starting using the GTI1500 after a bout a yr with the ACE250.
The GTI is great on coins tokens.etc, however I feel im missing out
on a lot of stuff BECAUSE .. i have NO idea how to interpret some of the signals.
I get a lot that bounce gold to coin etc i assume these are junk. Any bounce is right??
The coins of course are belltone, and sometimes the squeak sound , not the dull iron signal.
I usually hunt in All Metal unlees im at a park , then i use the Coin mode.
ANY help, advice wisdom will be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Ron

Hi Ron.
Welcome to the forum.
I'm not sure how US coins behave, I expect that as most detectors a tuned into US coins, then they should normally lock into a single notch. As an Aussie detectorist, I've seen some of our coins bounce around on the TID. Generally junk items will cause the meter to bounce around. You should be getting a fairly solid tone on coins unless they are on edge, then it can be a shorter tone with the meter showing the target a notch high than usual. If you don't have the target centred, this can cause the notches to bounce around a fair bit as well. I tend to ignore the sounds that are not solid.

Thanks for the welcome and the info. I didnt realize that coins on edge will bounce
on the upper scale cursor. Ill write that down as a reminder when im out detecting.
I do get a solid belltone on coins, and Ive learned that even a single ring not a
complete belltone should be checked. I just feel that i may be passing up good stuff
when i get weird bouncy signals. Also i wonder what all the size E and deeper
than 12 inhces could be ... or is it my pinpointing??
Thanks again for the info Im looking forward to more helpfulll info

Twitch??? im NEW and OLD remember!!!

I think that means giggle the coil a bit ??

If not then pls explain.
Also what ARE the chances that an R deeper than 12 in is a good target
I limlit my diggging to 4 inches in aprks so as not to make a mess
but in the woods ill dig deeper

Twitching is what the Minelab boys call wiggling. Just center the coil over the target and whip it rapidly side to side a couple of inches each way. The 1500 is a motion detector and the faster you move the coil the deeper it goes and the better it discriminates. Don't forget the penny trick. GTI's will often ID quarters as pennies. When you get a penny signal don't pass it up because you don't want the penny. Hit pinpoint and move the coil around over the target ever so gently and many of those penny ID's will turn into quarters.

Hi Bill

I tried a few of the tips i got today Slow swing, Sens at 6.5 "twitch"

In less than 1/2 hr while keeping one eye on the dog i got
$3.10 in change, an OLD looking key, a religious type
token and a dogs liscense. All at a localpark ive been to
MANY times

I htink the main thing is to SLOW DOWN. Thanks for
teh tips and keep in touch. Any advice you can pass along
will be greatly appreciated. its gonna be COLD soon so Ill
have time to practice

Good Hunting
Ron

Yeah the 1500 ain't a fast swinger. Slow down and it will reward you. Practice al the other stuff and your finds will improve. Good luck.

Bill

If you think that you have the target fairly well centred and it's still showing size E at over 12 inches, then it's just a large piece of metal.
