Hello,
I own a Surfmaster PI Pro since march 2003. I found any kind of ring/coin/trash you can immagine.
It is a great detector in my opinion.
Here are the problems/defects I faced:
1) Whites delivers new detectors with poor quality control. My last 3 detectors I got from them had all 3 the plastic waterproof cable connectors of the head loosen (and I mean LOSEN, they did not even fix the plastic bolt). So always check the connectors for loosen bolts (attention must be used not to tighten the bolt too much).
2) The supplied cable retainers are good for nothing. You'll have to fix it by yourself (I used tape).
3) The elbow cup nut and bolt tends to losen and I lost it! I suggest to replace the original with a inox nut and (self locking) bolt.
4) There is a reinforcing aluminium strip on the bottom of the plastic control box. That is meant to hold the two inox box latches toghether. That should be replaced with an identical inox one or electrolysis develops!
5) the two control knobs on the control box are too loose. They tend to accidentally move during search or when carring the detector around. You have to take care of that or you'll end up with exhausted batteries during transport!
6) Use tape to fix the batteries in the battery holder because they may slip off the holder somethimes.
7) Take care of the "water turbolence" effect since this is a 15uS detector and is very sensitive to water movement. See my preceeding post on that.

"> The head "flips" up if large , strong, waves hit it. This is due to the shape of the head. I do not understand why withes did not use a better shape (see Garret's,Minelab's etc..). It is not easy to move the head in the water.
The GOOD NEWS:
A) Very sensitive unit. No problems on small gold. It just misses small chains as almost all PI detectors do.
B) I succesfully replaced alcaline batteries with NI-CDs . It works a wonder.
C) The control box is easy to open and service and the O-ring seems to be well done.
D) As far as I understand , it is the best detector you can buy for your money unless you buy a unit from Eric Foster.
When you order a PI PRO specify a "weighted head" if you want to search in the water.
Cheers
