I hunted a 1903 farm house today, and even with the dry ground I found some good stuff!

old excelsior button, I think it is civil war era

5 wheaties 1916, 1919 (3), 1920, had a 3 coin spill with two 1919's and the 1916, so that was cool

1907 V nickel.......MY FIRST EVER!!!! I almost did NOT dig this, it was a horrible signal on my ace 250 bouncing from foil to pulltab, but It said 6 inches deep and I dug, boy I was pumped to see the "V"

something that I am not sure what it is say napoleon emperor on it..........??? same size as a penny, any ideas?

plus here is a pic of the house

Did that nickel come out of the ground looking like that? If so, that is some very forgiving soil. Getting dry here too. We had a ton of rain early in August and it has been dry for about 10 days. Areas that get a lot of shade are great but some areas are bone dry already. I got awful depth today in the dry areas. Deepest find was about 4 inches. I got a few nice deep coins under some trees one of which was a Memorial cent. How that cent wound up under all those roots is a good question. I spent about 10 minutes on that one lousy coin.

Excelsior is the motto of New York State. Start your research there. The Napoleon coin also deserves some research. Let's see a better photo and one of the reverse.

ok here is the V nickel right out of the hole..............

the button is a New York State Militia staff button, I found it on a civil war site

Nice finds G-4.

What a great day you had!!!!

Congrats on some nice finds. One of my V nickels has the number five stamped on it. They used to do that way back because guys would gold plate those nickels and pass them off as five dollar gold pieces.

did they have a gold piece that looked like that?

I just looked in my coin book only one I see with the 5 on it is the shield nickel, is that the one u are referring to?

THe nickel I have has been ( with a standard hand stamp ) stamped with the number five by someone other than the mint so it couldn't be passed off as a five dollar gold piece. If I can find it I'l post a pic of it.
