Today I decided to go through my one bucket of junk. (and I do mean junk, or so I thought <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
">) I first bought a detector about 5 years ago and my first year is where most of this has come from, but not all. Way back than I said to myself, C.C., you're just getting into detecting and don't have a clue what the heck you're doing so save everything, so I did. Now flash ahead a few years and it's time to see if there is any treasure in the trash. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
">
Most of what I did find will be tossed out but these are my better "finds"
A little brass cross with some of the silver plate remaining. I could finish cleaning it, but am not interested enough to bother. Still, not bad for junk.

A couple military buttons. WW2 vintage likely
<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox2.jpg" alt="" />
This I believe is an overalls button. Have seen them before but not 100% sure.

Oh yeah, that Swiss Army knife. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
"> I'll have to throw that in my bag. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="

<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox4.jpg" alt="" />
A neat Victorian era pin.

Not what I expect while I'm detecting an old site. A hubley toy gun! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox6.jpg" alt="" />
This next item I do remember finding a few years ago. I was sure it was a coin but drove me crazy because I thought it was old but could not ID it. We did make a few other finds but never went back. I sure will now because with the added experience with finding, and looking at so many coins I picked it up this time and instantly read the word "Liard" A french coin, probably mid to late 1600s. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="

<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox8.jpg" alt="" />
An advertising thimble from the Delco Light Company. Circa. early 1900s. Does need some work.
<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox9.jpg" alt="" />
Here is one I really like and do remember finding it, but didn't think it was old enough to be interesting. I was wrong. It reads "Read the Herald and the Mail" I did a quick net search and one of our local papers in the 1860s & 1870s was the Herald. This alone would have made my junk pillage worth it but I'm not done yet. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
">
(again, needs some work but I think it will clean up nice)
<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10071/junkbox10.jpg" alt="" />
And now for the find of my hunt. I was tossing about 95% of what I was grabbing into the trash and this hit me like a ton of bricks. <img src="/metal/html/oh.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":O"> It doesn't look like much and that's why it likely made it to the junk box. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
"> Again, it had everything to do with experience that told me that was a silver coin, but a low grade old one. This shot was taken after a little soap and water and still did not clean up any better. I knew I still had a chance after a more agressive cleaning but it didn't look good. Even one letter or numbers position would probably give me an ID with the limited types of these coins which circulated in my area. Well I tried to clean it.....

It's an early 1700s French silver with WAY more detail than I expected. There was literally nothing to tell me what it was before cleaning. This one sure almost got away.

Like I said, these are low grade silver (mixed with copper) so to have all the silver plate still intact is considered very good condition as far as these things go. It is also one that is hard to take a good picture of... here's another try but maybe not much better. The coin does look quite alright in person. Again, originally I would have been happy just with any one marking. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="

Well that about sums it up for my junk box hunt. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> So final tally... still a bunch of junk, <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> a site to go back to now that I realize it is much older than I thought, A local advertising thimble, and a silver coin that's near 300 years old. And they call it junk? <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="
