HAHAHAHAHAHA TV shows strike again.......

Elton

New member
This evening a guy who lives down the street from me stopped by. I don't really know him as he lives a good 15 to 16 houses away.

He said he has seen me at the neighborhood school detecting..

He has purchased a 1895 house property about 30 miles west of me... He wanted to know if I would consider detecting it for "HIM" and give him all I find.

Per him his Great, great grandfather once owned the property, and he bought it from a family member. I clarified what he meant by "For HIM"... Yep he wanted everything I found for his keeping.

He said he saw that on a TV show where they detected and gave everything to the home or land owner. And wanted to know if I did it that way..or was part of that group.

I kind of laughed and said. No I detect for myself. And I keep the items. Though I would give him a few choices of the finds. Or if something of real value was found it could be sold and split between us.

He wanted no part of that........ He felt he should get it all like on the shows he has watched... I said "Good Luck with that. Maybe he could contact those guys and they would do it. I felt like a jerk being that way. But come on.. Spend days, and days detecting and give him everything.. I think Not... True story my friends.. Oh he didn't feel like a jerk asking me to hunt it for "HIM"....... He actually wanted to leave his phone number in case I changed my mind... NOT A CHANCE !!!

Didn't sound like a good deal to me LOL

PS: I posted this exact post in Metal detecting forum as I know not all read this forum...

I think I would have suggested that he should invest in a detector and hunt the grounds himself.

The Hell? Make yourself some damned old Lemonade out of this Lemon! Call him up and Have at it!

Tell him yeah, I've changed my mind!

EVERYTHING you find you will turn over to him, but he has to give you cash up front for your expenses, your investment in gear, and your expertise learned over years and years....I figure you are worth 100 bucks per hour, which may be on the low side, hell, the girl that cuts my DOGS hair is getting that! But for the sake of conversation, lets use that...of course that includes travel, and you drive real slow on account of you are old... your 'per diem' is another 50...and, you want 1000 cash in hand before your feet and coil hit the dirt, ...furthermore, you need to have a porta potty set up on site, a pastry chef, a cook, and a buxom barrista bringing you a hot drink when you want it...!

If he balks, just impress him on the fact of how many mason jars could be buried out there full of 'Ol great grandpaps gold coins?...And, how this is your 'Family' rate you are charging, on account of you like the cut of his jib, and don't like to take advantage of Democrats if you can help it!

Yep love them shows!! I had an older guy stop me at a park hunt and asked me to find his property markers for him.. He lived in the country 10 miles away... I said i cant charge him since im not licensed but if he lets me hunt his yard then id try hard to find them.. He laughed and said i wasnt gonna pay you anyway thats why i stopped ....to save some money...he handed me his number and said no you cant dig anywhere in my yard except where the markers would be so no detecting!!! I Then laughed crumpled up his number put it in my trash pouch and put my head phones back on... He got mad and asked me again and i said sir are you really that dumb that you have to ask again...really??? Whats wrong with people these days?? I know im an a$$ at times but working in a prison so long has made me this way lol

Elton,

I had a very similar situation happen to me as well. The woman asked if I would hunt her 5 acre farmhouse from the 1770's and that she would decide which items I would be receiving lol Although it was very tempting... I had to pass. I wasn't going to make the 100 mile round trip only to give everything I find to the homeowner. There has to be some incentive for us to devote our time, and money for equipment / gas. The way this woman was leaning with her e-mail to me, I would of received a rusty bolt for my efforts. NO THANK YOU.

your funny mud

Basstracker I would of done the same thing!

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I just wasn't then, and still am not interested in his terms...and I think his asking that way shows me his character..

ME<ME< ME is his motto........... Plus I would have to be old, and stupid, and maybe," a little senile" to take that deal Hahahahahahahaha

n/t

It kind of floored me a little the guy would even ask such a thing .............hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Elton, I would have showed that guy the trashy side of your finds pouch and said this is what you can expect to find on most givin days:) I keep mine always partially stocked with enough in the bottom to show people just for such occasions. Most people I meet in my experience are those in the inquisitive stage as of yet, except one-------------so far. A man claiming to be swinger himself and curious as to my equipment, approached me in a previously hunted park in a poor community. Not allot of detectors here but also not a lot of great finds although it is where I found my 3 Mercury dimes. The man asked what I was using. I told him a mid priced Fisher. The F70. He told me he only used a high end detector and there wasn't anything in this park. It has 4 ball fields where annual tournaments are played, a totlot with a picnic shelter. Just a matter of time. Right? When I asked what he was swinging, he couldn't remember the name. But it was a good one. I found my usual $2.50 and smiled all the way home.------------IB PS, the good part is he lives 16 houses away and not next door:rofl:

Elton,
We would all be shocked at the amount of pure stupidity in this world. Hey, don't get me wrong, I will assist within reason but to drive a 100 mile round trip and then dictate (I get it, it's "their" property and "their" rules) what I am taking home. I am willing to negotiate but don't ask me to dedicate hours and hours of my weekend time, spend 50 bucks in gas, and all that I have to show for it is a rusty nail - they are a bigger fool for asking.

Getting back to Elton's original post, just what do the guys get compensated for the TV digging programs? I am reasonably sure there are perks beyond not getting to keep their finds. I suspect there is a paycheck involved. Your neighbor is not thinking beyond himself for sure. It is a free country (rapidly becoming otherwise) and while it can hurt to ask, one is free to say no and/or make a counter offer. How will people learn if we do not educate them? The Good Book tells us to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Would he go that far out of HIS way to do a total favor for a neighbor? If so there is some yard work, etc. he might be interested in. Just a thought.

Sure I'll hunt your yard for you with my time and expensive equipment. All I found was this wheat penny from 1950... Meanwhile my boot is getting really uncomfortable.

Elton the guy must have been a democrat.

tabman

Digsgti, great minds run in the same channels, this is exactly what I would do and LOL everytime I dug something for "him".

PastorTom .he was pretty self centered from my initial contact... Thanks for your response Sir...

I like the boot idea. If he's looking over your shoulder though, some "slight of hand" magic tricks would come in handy. I'd like to see his face when you pull a piece of 'slaw' from behind his ear. lol. Here buddy, that's for you.

Naw theres a boat load of free load'in morons out there that think we are nerdy dumdass'es just wait'in to spend our time and money for nutt'in.

I have ,thankfully ,yet to receive such a proposal. The closest I come to that is the "lost and found" ads I occasionally see.
Even the guys that let me pan and detect on their claims are not that greedy.

I kinda know how ya feel. I went on a "club'" hunt once. Found a really nice piece of silver. Outta nowhere , the "hunt master" says the property owner has the right to keep whatever he likes. Really? Why didn't we discuss this b4 the hunt ? There he was with his hand out. I gave it to him with a smile on my face. Lesson learned - That dog don't hunt no more. CCH

I actually have offered to give the land owner all i found, but after hunting all day and handing him a hand full of change, and bullets..some very old...conicals,and balls..he handed it all back and laughed.
guess he thought i was going to hand him pockets full of gold and silver.. I really didn't find anything valuable monetarily, but the bullets were valuable in my eyes
And now I can detect anytime I want there..he doesn't even ask what i find.
