Hand held gps

Plan on purchasing a hand held gps with a little help from you guys and girls. What do you recommend? Not looking for within a foot of the place but a hundred yards would be helpful.Dont know if i will like so inexpensive would be good. Thanks ahead of time charlie

I got the Garmin Etrex H for about $80 have not had a chance to use it much as of yet but it seems to work quite well in my tests.

I have had the best satisfaction with the Garmin's myself. You can find good used ones pretty easily. The Vista is a nice inexpensive unit and it will accept maps as well. I really like the GPS 60csx though.

I've got a 60csx and use it in the car and in the field. Much more reliable than my phone for GPS and a great unit. Gives you a bit of piece of mind when heading into the woods.

im a GPS 60csx user and love it. loaded all my place markers from google earth on to it along with a topo of texas with a road map and im never lost or cant find a place to detect.

I always take my cell phone when I go detecting, for reasons other than using it just as a phone. Its an iphone 3gs(gps hardwired) in a very handy protective otter box case that is made for it. It's also a camera and video recorder.......There are plenty of GPS apps for an iphone 3gs or later. You, just need to find one that suits. I've got the MotionX GPS app that also has a walk tracking function. I use this part of it, when I go detecting and keep track of my searching movements over an area ad I use the TomTom app for navigation when I drive to a spot, though the MotionX GPS can do the same. I did have some issues originally, when I first started using this phone as a gps, but I've overcome those problems and it's been working great ever since.

All this means is that one less device is needed when I go detecting , which was originally a Garmin12 and I can always stay in touch.

I have the etec legend and it does fine for geo-cacheing and getting you from point a-b. There is now available in some areas for the gps machines that take memory cards that will tell you if you are on state land, blm land, forest and in Montana even on private land giving you the land owners name. This is set up for hunters but is going to be very handy on finding out who owns this piece of land I want to detect!
The 60 csx is one that takes cards. And seems to be a quite popular handheld. Looking at one myself!

Another Garmin 60csx user here. I have had mine for a few years and LOVE it. Works in the car and in the field. You can load detailed street maps into it, lake and wilderness maps, waterways maps, etc. It is also a "mapping" unit which means it can store a trail of where it goes. Great for showing you where you've hunted in particular spots.
