Has anyone noticed that grass doesn't grow around trash?

I don't know if it's my imagination or what. I've often noticed that with a coin on or near the surface there is an inch or two diameter space with no grass growing. Also with a larger piece of trash a few inches under the surface there can be a patch of 3 -4 inches that is bare or with sparse grass.

Has anyone else noticed this?

My curiosity has to do with metal detectorists cleaning up trash that can be one of the several benefits to metal detecting. Soil enhancement and trash removal are the other benefits I see.

Hmmm..now you got me paying attention all weekend on this phenomenon you witnessed! And I've stabbed a LOT of coins and trash in thick green thatch as well as bare dirt!..Never once noticed the pattern you are mentioning, and Buddy, I pay some serious attention to detail!. Its always good to try to observe these kind of things though, and I got a kick out of your post, and am not discounting it at all and will make an effort to focus on your findings for a while to see if I experience the same thing...

In my albeit limited experience, I have personally not witnessed a solid definable pattern to where coins and metal is in the ground based upon the grass alone.. but hey, it might be a regional thing! Stay in it, and keep hunting, metal and time wait for nobody!

I have noticed the same thing. I guess that makes us "green" if we take it all home with us. Never thought of myself as an earth muffin.

If you have ever looked at a package of root killer-the type used to kill roots in sewer lines- one of the main ingrediants is copper.... so I believe copper is poisonous to the plants...

I know copper is toxic to a lot of things...I will attempt my own research on this subject in an honest attempt to validate your results, I just hit the ping, stab and grab.....that said, since I'm legally blind, and deaf in one ear, one of the things I most like about these magical detectors is a guy doesn't have to rely on their eyes all the time! Any little tidbit like this is a good thing to share!

what are the guidelines on what forums we can post on. this forum is about metal detecting but was moved to the general interest forum. my bad i thought i was on the metal detecting forum but it was the finds so i understand it being moved thanks

In fact a couple years ago while BSing with a park manager, i mentioned that digging up shallow coins and shallow junk will eventually get rid of those target related bare spots in the turf!
He was 100% sold when i pryed out a large piece of can slaw from its bare spot with a screw driver right before his eyes.

Every little bit counts.

Yes I have noticed this as well , our 1$ &2$ are large and grass has to grow over them it seems

Here in the South I have not noticed that phenomenon. After reading your post I took careful note to see if I could see the same thing. I did not find it to be true in my area as there was plenty of grass above the aluminum cans that I found.
