Has anyone use the Platypus or Joey coil What do you think of it?

First of all I want to say I learn a lot from this site.
I've had my Eplorer 2 for about four months. I got it it the 10", 8", and a useless EXcelerator2 14".By useless I mean in trashy areas. That is why I'm looking for the Platypus 8.5x10.5 or the Joey 5x10.
Could someone give me their opinion on those coils?
I mainly coinhunt and hate switching between the and and the 10"
I feel that either one of these coil would be for me an all around coil.
Many thanks for your advises and this great site.:minelab:

The depth is a little better than the stock 8
I don't like the 8 so might be biased there.

I can run the sens in my ground around 20 to 22 where the stock coil (10) I can only run around 18.

Joey with sens at around 20 here will get coins at around 10 inches and to top it off it is light, only draw back is it is not water proof so dew will cause falsing if it is heavy enough.

Hi Ray,

I`ve been wondering about the Joey vs the Platypus myself. Almost ordered the Platypus a couple of days ago but I ended up with a nagging suspicion that it wouldn`t be much different than the 10.5DD coil.

I`ve searched the forum and read what`s already been posted but it would be nice to hear the latest opinions.

Charlie I guess the Joey will be out of question for me,
I'm an early bird so I can beat the heat. And here East of South Carolina the dew in the morning is pretty dense. "Bummer"

I have been using the platypus quite a bit lately, Its pretty good iron considering the size of it.. The joey is quite bit better in non ferrous trash and alot lighter.. It wont get as deep as the stock coil though. the both seem quite prone to falsing out of control in wet conditions.. Actually had both get so bad I would have had to quit hunting if I didnt have another coil along.. But in dryer conditions they work fine, rain or heavy dew I leave them home.. Hard to say that the joey could be a replacement for the stock, as it can no way get as deep, but the platypus can get pretty close maybe deeper and seems better in iron, and being a bit narrower, might be a bit better in trash.. One thing though its really hot on the edges and will take a few passes to figure out exactly where the target is sometimes, its every bit as heavy as the stock. Another thing both are very sensitive to hot rocks, more so than the round coils, so if you have lots of hot rocks you might not be happy using them all the time.

Right now I have the X12, X8, X5, Joey, Platypus and stock coils, and have use for all of them, but to be honest if I could only have one along with the stock I think it would be the X8, Its not as deep as the platypus, but its sleek and light, its the most stable of all my coils(X5 pretty stable too, but its for special purposes), doesnt mind the wet and doesnt go off too bad on hot rocks. But I like them and use them all.

Jim I thank you for your informations.
I guess I'll have to stay clear from both then, is there a way to waterproof those coils?
So I guess I'll have to stick with what I got then 8" and 10".It sais you're in upstate NY which area? I lived south of Saratoga.
Well I appreciate your inputs, that way I won't make a useless purchase.:look:

Well I usnderstand the platypus is supposed to be waterproof, I seem to have trouble with it in high humidity, so perhaps its condensation inside, or maybe mines got a pinhole leak in it or something.. it may just be mine, will see if any one else says they get the same thing.. The joey I did seal it with silicone caulk around the cable connection and coil cover and that seems to help.. Dont get me wrong the joey gotta get fairly wet.. but heavy dew and rain will cause it to false, sometimes rendering it unusable. You are hunting water? If so I think I would stay away from the joey.. I live down below Kingston on the Hudson, about 60 miles south of Albany

Hey Jim...Have you ever been to the reanactment of the burning of kingston? I had a friend that lived in Saugerties and she took me....wow it was cool..British tried to concour Kingston...only to divert the real battle somewhere else. I guess they have it every year?

I was thinking the platy might be a good waterproof replacement for the leak-o-matic stock coil on the beach but several people told me it falses a lot on the ocean beaches to the point of not being usable. Some land hunting reports on the coil were not too encouraging either. One guy gave me his platy coil, I'm going to put it on the scope and run some tests. I have been hesitant to say anything as these may be isolated incidents.

The think that impresses me most about it is its ability to see nonferrous targets in heavy iron for its size, seems better than the stock and even 8 inch..so its a decent cellar hole coil... It does hang up in the twigs though.. need some coil inserts for it
