I just came back from my second hunt with the new X70, head full of questions to ask;

...but I guess that's not protocol(for some, at least).

I'll just search for my own answers so as not to bother anyone.

reported using the 5 X 10 for relic hunting. I've read them all and don't remember seeing that specific reference. Personally, I don't see any reason it wouldn't be a good one. Maybe the 3 kHz frequency would be a bit better for those larger/deeper targets. But I see no reason the 5 X 10 wouldn't work just fine. If you take yours out relic hunting, post your results and thoughts. HH Randy

McNickle, I did scroll down and did a search also and never found anything on the 5x10 coil for RELIC HUNTING, I don't know why you attacked me like that, I have never done anything to you!! Although I have only been in this hooby for 3 years, i will help anyone that I can, because I have found a lot of GOOD PEOPLE that have helped me learn this hobby, and to all of you that have, I thank you!
And if asking questions on this forum is a bad thing, maybe the forum moderater will tell me not to ask any more.

Greg: So far I've been out twice with the X70 (w/9" Stock Coil), just working it in coin modes, getting used to settings etc. Man, does it ever hammer the copper, brass and silver targets:crylol: This is my first "serious" detector, so I'm taking my time and enjoying the trip so far.

Most of my hunting is done in wooded areas for relics and old coins, so the 5x10 coil, if it works out could sure be a plus. I'll give it a try sometime soon and let ya know how it goes. But I'm with you on wanting more info from those experienced with the 5x10 in respect to relic and coin hunting.

It is very sensitive to the low end targets and is great on buttons and bullets. I hunt a late 1800's logging camp when I can get in there. Snakes and the baddest attitude Russian Bore Pigs you ever saw. Got treed once buy them now I take my 9MM loaded with 13 rounds of Black Talon's. Nasty little buzz saw bullet. Now it is here little piggy here little piggy. :D: :D: . Anyway I have found some very nice stuff there and I can say the 5X10 will snake around better then the 9" 7.5KHz coil, The 5X10DD is good on every target, be it silver, brass buttons, or bullets but is especially good on the low end targets like buttons and brass and GOLD. I only have the 9" 7.5KHz coil and the 5X10 DD and I have to say I would rather hunt with the DD. The new 10" Round DD is supposed to be a deep coil from what I have heard so far and even the 9" concentric is deeper then the DD buy a couple of inches but, that can be expected of a concentric coil. Me I would rather have the shorter depth DD and cover more space and be more effective in my coverage then I can get from a concentric coil. After I clean it out with the DD then I am going to take my Shadow X5 and the shadow 5X10" DD coil go back and get the rest of the deep stuff. The Shadow X5 5X10" DD don't loose and depth over the 9" Shadow X5 concentric coil. I have found that the Xterra X70 with the 5X10" DD coil will ID down to 10"s with accurate ID but past 8"s the ID will jump up a couple of numbers. Like a quarter at 8"s will read 42 but at 10"s it will bounce from 42 to 44. Especially the silver coins. I have only found a few buttons with the X70 and can't remember what there numbers were. I will pay more attention next time for the numbers. However you won't mistake the audio on a piece of brass. Clear as a bell on low end targets. The only target that has a scratchy ton when using the 99 tones is the Quarter but even that when you get it you don't mistake what it is, anyway sorry I can't be of more help to you then that. I prefer the 5X10" DD over the concentric7.5KHz 9" coil for my type of hunting. HH and I hope Mike Bearden will jump in here and help you out on the Relic hunting as that is what he does a lot of and he has had more hours on the X70 and the different coils then I have. Well I have the least amount of time on this particular coil than the rest in my arsenal so take what I say with a grain of salt. Only 50 hours or so, maybe this coming weekend I can give it some more time if it's not 110 degree's outside :)
I hate to keep saying this but every coil presently offered for the X-Terra (performance wise) is going to be very site specific.
As Jerry said, the 5X10 design sure makes it better for snaking around through the thickets and it performs rock solid without any coil bump falsing even when cranked way up on the sensitivity. This is a very smooth running coil. The depth is right on par to the stock 9" concentric and MAYBE a little better in my highly concentrated iron/ore dirt. A coil MUST have good stability, reasonable depth and be easy to use in the woods where I hunt or it's NO GOOD to me. So far, this coil has what it takes to make me happy.
The first place I took this coil to was a spot that was used for black powder rifle turkey shoots. I've had my Shadow X5 there several times, the X-Terra with the 5X10 DD hits every bit as hard as the Shadow with a DD ... that's impressive in my book, especially since the ground is primarily red clay based with tiny iron ore rocks mixed in. 3 ringers at depths of 8" are common here, I pulled several at 11" with this coil and it surprised me because I don't remember digging any that deep with the X5.

I do appreciate the great info, so now I need to be looking into buying one of those coil, I watched one sell on ebay for $55.00 but I didn't want to waste the money if it didn't work better. Like I said I havn't got very many hours behind this machine, I bought all three coils that where avialable when I bought, and have only used the 9.75 coil so far. I am planning a relic hunt later this year and the ground is real bad, so I am just trying to get all the info on what coil, that I should use, I will take all the coils I have, I just don't what to waste all my time trying to figure out what coil to use!

Thanks from me, too, to all who posted about the 5 x 10 coil:thumbup:.

I tried mine for about an hour today, and could not really get a handle on it:nerd:. I was using the same sensitivity(16) and the patterns recommended for coin shooting, as that was my focus for today, not relics. With the stock 9" coil at these settings I find most everything with ease.

Darn, it is sensitive, but I wasn't finding anything but bottlecaps and a few pennies. Solid 36's always came up bottle caps.

I know it's me, not the coil. Does anyone have suggestions for settings to use with the 5 x 10? If so, I'd sure appreciate it, and I'm sure some others could benefit, too.

Here is some info I just received from my dealer, Chuck@Treasurenet:

The 5" x 10" DD is primarily designed for small gold items and nuggets, and is recommended to operate in Prosecting Mode, not Coin & Jewelry.

Hey Tinfoil, if you read this could you elaborate on what modes you operate in? Thanks...
