Has anyone went from a sovereign to an explorer...only to return to a sovereign again?

I'm sure it's happened before. Just curious as to why. I really like my Sovereign XS-2a with Sunray DTI II meter.

I started out with an explorer. I really like that detector for coins but It doesnt pinpoint very well. Also the learning curve is tough at first. I wanted to wrap it around a tree at times. Once I learned it I really liked it. May own another someday.

I started out with an Explorer 2, bought an excal and then a sov. I sold the explorer 2 and Sov and kept the excal. I had many beefs about the sov, but most love it, so it must just be me.

I have switched back and fourth between the Sovereign and Explorer.I'm better with the Sovereign, but the Explorer is excellent at deep silver.I currently have both and use the Sovereign the most. HH Ron

i had the ex11 for about 6yrs and in that time it found me a load of rings at the beach but i got fed up with the weight so decided to try the sov elite because you can hipmount. i've used the elite for about a year now and find it much easier to use than the ex11 theres nothing in the depth between the two of them and i also think the elite finds the smaller rings

Thanks for the responses,Guys!

Like Altinkum said...the sovereigns seem to pick up the smaller gold better. I hunted around an old church a few years ago and found two gold plated items. An old cuff link and literacy award dated 1927. Both were around 5-6" deep. I also found a few shield and V nickels. You can't beat the sov/excalibur for finding small gold items better! By that I mean without any programs or guess work. That Sunray meter with it's reference chart is top notch!

Yes, but only 4 times. Always thought that there was something better out there. And there are, if you have the time, an engineering degree and patience to work them out. I'm just a slow learner, and I just got tired of all of that, and went for powerful simplicity. The Sovereign has only gotten better with time. If it were lighter, that would be the icing on the cake.

I have used every model of the Sovereign and every model of the Explorer and now the E-Trac. I learned my Sovereign well I feel before the Explorers came out and had a little problem getting to know the Explorers that well when they came out, but they did surprise me a few times what they could see. I seem to always prefer re the Sovereign for my hunts where I wanted to dig more good targets then bad ones so I wouldn't have to dig so much, could be I knew the Sovereign better and simple to use and understand. In the right hands the Explorers do well as I have seen many in my area get some nice deep coins in some worked to death areas. I also used my Sovereign in a area of a old fairgrounds where 2 Explorers had worked hard and picked out some nice coins they missed.
Now that i have a E-Trac also I find I like this better than any of the Explorers I have used as i have the pitch hold so the tones I can hear much better plus how you can set this detector up, but still I wouldn't give up my Sovereign GT. I think you will find many that went from the Sovereign to the Explorer only to go back to the Sovereign and some went to the Explorers and never looked back. Has a lot to do with how much you know the Sovereign as most of us know what it can do and seem to always come back to it or have one in reserve for some areas we hunt. We have a couple in our club that went from the Sovereign to the Explorer and with in 6 months they were back to the Sovereign as it was so much easier to use and understand. I also have one member that has used the Explorer XS since they came out and will not switch to any other one as he seems to really kick butt with it and seen him pick up so many silver and deeper coins I can see why he wont switch.
I will say the Sovereign is hot on nickles much better than the Explorers are and with the 180 meter to me seems to ID so well along with the tones of the Sovereign I can walk over more trash than the Explorers.

Ive always wanted a Sov but have been happy with my Exp choice. Now that ive moved from Ind. to Fl and have started using the Xcal i may have to pick up one. It would still be hard for me to switch now that im past the learning curve. Im not sold on the pitch hold but i know the Sov can be tweaked and im no where close to learning the Xcal. Right now if i went to a park my confidence level would be grab the Exp.... if nothing elce for the silver. Dont be fooled the Exps take time to learn and many think they know them but their finds show otherwise. They take a lot of hunting and a long time to learn. At least the Etrac has made it easier for a new comer to be very effective right out of the box. Ive not tested those chains yet Rick but the Exp does pretty well on the wet and dry sand. You just have to choose the right machine for what you are looking for..... on the beach Gold in land... silver and relics for me. I guess i need someone here in Fl to convince me the Sov is better than the Exp on tiny gold. Love the hip mount thou.

I'm in pretty much the same boat as Rick , and still have my E Trac and other machines too .....The tones and huntability of the Sovereign and the fact that I can waterpoof it easier for a hip or chest mount , makes it my choice besides my Excal for beach hunting ...... My E Trac does all my hard dirt duties ......There is always something more to learn about the E Trac , and it hunt's so well the more you learn it ... Once learned somewhat well, it's really pretty much a set it and forget it machine ...... ...I just recently bought ANOTHER Sovereign GT as I have had them all and find the GT the one that suits me the best .....That ever changing tone that drives people crazy puts a smile on my face ......I guess that's why I'm a synth nut ...Jim

Yes I have a sov xS 2, after a few years tried explorer, but sent it straight back. Tempted to test the newest machines now but don't think they will match up?

I just don't hunt the dirt enough to switch from the Sovereign. I have a GT and an XS-2a. If I tag along on a dirt hunt I feel like the Sovereign will fill in OK. I really think the FBS machines are wonderful. But I just don't think I would use one if I had it.

I've owned three Explorers and have used an Etrac but my choice is still the GT. In my soil it's deeper than my Explorers ever were and seems to find coins in iron with Iron Mask On better than I did with my Explorers. The Etrac's limited conductivity scale seems like a step backwards to me. The Sovereign has much more resolution in the low and medium target range and better audio.

 Still havent been out hunting. I've got 2 old houses just torn down near me that are begging for me to hit but just can't muster the effort.

Yes i did, and i love my explorer, but the sovereign GT. is a deeper detector i know this because coins were just much depper. i dug a indina head cent one time it was over 14-incses deep. and silver at 12- 13 inches. i have been useing the explorer for seven years, and have not yet ever found a coin deeper then my sovereign. the exploreris a smart detector.... but not the deepest. also the sovereign is a copper and nick. lover.

What is everyone using for Headphones on the GT......This is something important that seems to be overlooked. They want to sell me Koss ur 30 which are no longer produced. I'm looking for something that'st not very expensive and can drown out the background noise from the beach. Some good leads will be appreciated.

Park Pirate, I too have found that my GT is deeper than my Explorers ever were. The GT's VDI is also much more stable at depth.
