Hating my Tiger Shark Help!

DellrugbyPM

New member
I have a Tiger Shark. Only hunts here are beach hunts here. With the highest descrim setting I still only get pull tabs and nails. Nails. Should discriminate them! I really hate the machine Also fresh out of the boz the wing nuts are stripped, the coil flails around in the water. Impossible to send back to the US. Hate Tesoro now. Here is my machine... will be trashing it. 400 hours with nothing on beaches full of people never detected. Total trash machine.

help!

Hi Dell...

....I don't know how to approach this diplomatically, only to say I have had my Tiger Shark going on 15 yrs. now, never been sent back to the factory.

I run my disc. at 2 or 3, just enough to knock out a small iron nail and I dig all pulltabs, that is the gold region in my hunting experience. Unless those nails are galvanized they should Disc. out at a setting of 2 or 3. My ground balance is set at a neutral setting where the Threshold never changes as I'm bobing the coil at 8" inches in the air down to ground level. If you are not familiar with manual ground balance, it can and will screw with your Disc.

Sometimes nails phase out gradually, and can be identified that way. Different than most other items. Some nails sound pretty good all the way up and you will dig them. If you don't have the patience to learn your machine, you will lose interest pretty quick.

Think the problem is you have the wrong machine. Your using a machine designed for Freshwater, doesn't do very well in the salt.
Also your best coil for the TS overall is the 8" coil.

I'd try a different pair of socks first...Polyester Argyles, at least knee high.....maybe a pair of shorts with a few more pockets on them as well..other than that, looks like you are good to go!

Wow, that has to be a serious pain in the butt. Spend the money and come up with a bad machine and frustration. OK that said the flopping coil may be lack of the rubber washers that add friction to the fitting. I mention that because I ran into someone recently who had that problem with a Compadre. He somehow had not put in the rubber washers. So far as the machine itself it sounds like a ground balance or improper setting of the threshold issue. I've only handled a Tiger Shark briefly but it seems like the operation is much like my Vaquero. Once I nailed down proper process on ground balance and threshold it ran like a charm.

Welcome to the forum, must admit i cannot put my finger on it but something does not sound right,400 hours on the beach and nothing decent to show for it,is it a case of operator error, faulty item,or eventhe slightest hint of a 'spoof' video.Surely you would have thought something was possibly wrong alot sooner that 400 hours, well i certainly would have.

Of course i hope you get it sorted out quickly if the machine is at fault,so out of interest what settings did you use, have you used any other make or brand of detector, please note that i am not saying anything specifically is wrong but a few things just dont stack up if that makes sense.

It sounds like you may have the sensitive to high, like Hombre said nails should be gone at 2 or 3.I reley do not see the point of going any higher you will miss just about all gold rings and you will lose a lot of depth at higher descrim levels. You say it Impossible to send back to the US ,why? The Tiger Shark is one of the best freshwater detectors out there at any price but it does not work that well on wet salt beach.try to lower your sen and keep your dis at 2 or 3 and ground balance it in all metal

Dell,
Try using the Tiger Shark on dry sand or dirt. This might give you an idea if it is the machine or not. I've tried using my Tiger Shark in saltwater and it was almost impossible to tell good targets from bad. Just too much falsing even in Salt mode. Sorry to say, (like others have said) the Tiger Shark is best in freshwater.
I also run my sens between 2 and 3 with great results.
As for the coil bolt giving you issues call Tesoro, they will send you out I new one.
Hope you get things sorted out quickly.

Some very kind and patient responses to your second ever post......nuff said.

I had a Tiger Shark years ago...only used it at saltwater beaches, some with black sand problems....machine worked well under these conditions. Used to leave my Disc. on 2, and the only nails I ever detected were copper ones out of boats that had fallen apart. Detector worked well and found silver and gold at the beach, on sand and in water.

Only had my Tiger for a short time, I'm new to hunting water. I run a Tejon on land. The sounds are very different, much harder to ID iron with the Tiger Shark. I believe that's because iron in the water rusts more resulting in a lot of high conductive iron oxide and little "halo effect" that I have learned to ID with a land detector. Used it only in fresh water so far, I'm happy with the way it hits on small targets, much better than a Pi machine. I'm beginning to learn the sounds and am confident that I will be able to pick out the iron signals like I do with my Tejon with time. Mount your control box on the arm rest, not the shaft, and your back will feel better. No problems with the 8" coil becoming loose, if it ever does metal detector dealers sell a brace that goes between the coil and lower shaft.

400hrs on Dubai beaches with nothing but nails and tabs? They have vending machines in Dubai that spit out gold bars! Its one of the richest cities on the globe! They build islands in the shape of palm trees! Theres more mega yachts there and helicopters than about anywhere else!

A guy would think hunting a popular and packed beach in Dubai would be easy pickins no matter what rig...I dont know about this whole post, hence my suspicion of its veracity...something not right at all..400hrs of frustration and no finds? In Dubai? Not one? Thats a lot of hunting without figuring out what is going on no matter where you are...

Just another drive by shooter would be my guess, seems to be a lot of that going on here...lol

400 hours with nothing to show. Well its either the detector or its you .Plant you a test bed in the backyard. And check the detector. If the detector checks out, and I suspect it will, then you got some learning to. GO to a school yard and dig some clad till you figure out how it responds to good targets. You got to learn to walk before you can run. If it's the detector then be glad you got a Tesoro. Their service is top notch. You can order a new coil washers and a bolt. If you digging tabs the you just haven't run the coil over gold. Cant blame the detector for that. No detector will detect something that's not there.

I know right? Along comes this guy whos allegedly hunting some of the richest beaches in the World and says his Tesoro Sand Shark is a total piece of junk!..and even after casting aspersions like that, some very helpful Teeboys step up to the plate to try to offer solutions..and the guy doesnt even reply with a 'thank you'?......I think he was trying out a youtube vid for the first time and wanted 'hits' or something to show his facebook friends how cool he might be?..

His vitriolic post regarding what we all know is a capable machine and his accompanying vid shows he's a total putz....I will go out on a limb here and make the assessment that he lacks the mental capability of correctly distinguishing the difference between excrement and apple butter, doubt he could find a car in a junkyard, or his own house keys in one of his multiple pockets!....I'm actually amazed he's lived this long on this Planet what with all its inherent dangers regarding electricity and whatnot...I am surprised and dismayed all at once here...surprised the guy lived this long and had a bit of technological knowledge to register a post here.. and dismayed he appears to have been successful on all counts!

Oh well, I bet some Jaguar or LandRover dealer sold him a sweet set of wheels in the past, virtually guaranteeing him some strange trim, which he never got and to this day wonders why...and I bet he owns some Ping golf clubs too...I wonder if he posts youtube vids on the Ping website talking trash regarding why he cant drive 300 yd off the fairway no matter how hard he works at it like advertised? The vast amounts of strange trim promised by the Car dealer?, well, thats open to interpretation I suppose, after all, goats would be considered 'strange trim' in some circles..personally, I'd go with the LandRover for goats...more ground clearance to chase them down if they dont comply, and enough room in the back if they do!.......

Right on Mud! Darwin called it survival of the fittest. Sounds like luck has been on side so far.
