Neither me nor any of my buddies have ever found a gold coin that has not been in jewelry.
The $10 indian head gold sounds alot higher than an indian head penny, and the $5 Coronet sounds alot higher than a nickel but just a little lower than an indian head penny.

Can say I probably found the hardest gold coin to find. An 1852 gold dollar with a small hole in it. Am trying to figure out the macro on the camera, will try to post a picture. (camera is almost as complicated as an Explorer II!)

Over the years my wife has found <STRONG>5 gold coins </STRONG>not in jewelery or in a cache.
The best one was an 1858 $5 gold piece that came from a Civil War site in Georgia. Several of us hit it and it was super trashy being next to the road. My wife opted to stay near the truck and the rest of us walked up the hill. An hour or so later we headed back with little to show other than excercise and saw her still digging along the road. Half chuckling we asked what she had found. Well, she opened her hand and showed us several bullets, a NY state button and then pulled the gold coin out of her pocket! Guess who ate crow that day . . .
The others came from 1) an old house foundation, 2) gold mining camp in the north GA mountains, 3) old French coin on what had been a beach but it was not in a piece of jewelry and 4) the site of an old horse racing track.
They are out there but what I always tell people who ask if I've found a $10 or $20 gold piece is "<EM>If I lost $20 today, I'd spend a good deal of time looking for it. If I lost it in the 1800's, I'd spend a month looking for it!</EM>"

I found an 1851 Quarter Eagle (coronet) on November 17th, 1993 at approx. 4:17 pm at an old home site in a 160 acre corn field. It was in almost uncirculated condition except for some very small scratches from being turned in the soil for so many years. You never forget the date and time when that happens. That's the only one so far.

the first one was in france while i was on leave in the army. i found a napoleon 40 franc coin in a farm field. it was minted in 1811. i found it with a whites dectector that i mail ordered from sears in 1972. the second coin that i found was a 5 dollar quarter eagle on a construction project in downtown philadelphia this past october. they were dumping piles of dirt from another job so we could backfill our job. i was walking to the johnny on the spot and noticed a reflection in the pile. it was the quarter eagle.
