Reasons why finds in general are down:
1) The economy being stale/stagnant/unemployment etc;....less disposable money means fewer vacations and distance travelled. People are more aware of gas prices.
2) More general awareness of the hobby of metal detecting, partly because of T.V. shows highlighting the hobby. People think it's easy to get the good stuff and they think it's easy money.
3) More restrictions on areas to metal detect.
4) I have been guilty of this but some of us may think that just because we get a gold or silver ring or coin etc; one day from a particular spot, there is something 'special' about that spot and there are unlimited rings or coins to be found at that spot......so we spend more way too much time visiting and detecting that spot hoping and praying for the same success we had 10 years ago there!
I used to be an avid fisherman and have gone back many times to a once upon a time stretch on a stream/river that gave me a prize fish, only to find time and time again it was fished out, never to be the same. We need to explore, be flexible never assume we 'know it all', try different places and methods to be successful. If we do, finds will increase.
Points to consider:
*There are an unknown number of metal detectorists, some serious that don't care to display their finds. I'm thinking of at least one well known detectorist who has been detecting for many years and has written a number of books but never displays his finds which is ok. Nothing wrong with that but no one knows what treasures they find! Again, some just don't feel a need to share their techniques and successes with the world!!! which is perfectly ok to feel that way.
*You may say the following is a bit of a stretch! but some may not want to share their financial successes because of being on S.S.I. and/or section 8. You may laugh but I know someone in that position and if the authorities find out they are making more than they should, (there is a cap on what they can earn) they can say goodbye to their section 8 status etc;. Those valuable 'privileges' can be rescinded. Hence, they will not want to display their finds.
* The weather of course keeps detectorists indoors. The weather has always fluctuated but here in California this year, it's been very hot and dry for many months (drought conditions right now) and I for one don't feel like going out in 104 degree weather which it is today!
The list can be added to but these are a few reasons why I think finds have been fewer this year, at least in my 'neck of the woods'!!
BTW....This coming Monday I hit the beach for a week so it should be 20 to 30 degrees lower than here so I can't wait to cool off and hopefully get some gold!!!!
