having a problem with the city

I was detecting in a local park here in utah when I was told to stop by the local cops they told me to get permission from the city or mayor when I talked with them I was told no detecting on city property so I asked the mayor if he could take the park and city property off my taxes cause I could not recreate how I wanted to on the land I am paying for

Sorry, you are basically S.O.L. Once the city decides you cant detect you left with just hunting private property.

Try to see the up side. Every public park has been hunted A LOT. You will have much better finds on private property. Start hitting up all your friends and relatives.

If you want to get active, start attending all the city counsel meetings and bringing up the issue every time until they get so tired of hearing you they remove the ban! Talk to some area detecting clubs to get support and ideas.

Hey there detector freak. I've NEVER had a problem at any city park anywhere in Utah. And I've not heard of any change in the local laws of any municipality that would ban detecting.

What city were you hunting in when the officers stopped to talk to you? I see that you posted this in the wee hours of the morning. The parks do have a curfew. Perhaps it was afterhours?

There are cities with laws like this, so I ASSUMED this to be the case. Go to the city and ask for a copy of the statute that prohibits metal detecting. It COULD be a case of a cop who doesn't like detectorists. Find out the laws!

In Bucks County Pennsylvania we have to get a permit to md in county parks, it's free, I guess they just want you on file. It's good from January to December. There is a small set of rules to follow, the best one is they want us to "deliver any and all valuables and other recovered items to the Main Park Office....what happens to the "valuables and recovered items" after they get them?, I don't know, I should ask next time, I may get a laugh from their answer.

Scenario; At Park Office; Hey guys, is any of this "valuable" as I hoist a heavy bucket filled with iron and pieces of things, plow & tractor parts and who knows what, and clunk it on the counter..hey lady with the painted fingernails, will you go through this to see if anythings of value? need gloves? Maybe you have an archaeologist in the back there hanging around.
I may have to try that one of these days and get it on film, wonder what their reaction would be. Don't think I could keep a straight face.

In the State parks we have to get permission at the particular park you want to hunt, and it's a verbal yes or no...don't get that.

It happened inf Fillmore UT and it was at 2 pm

Just kidding about the curfew thing of course, but being asked to leave an area open to the rest of the public can make one feel like you've done something wrong. I'm hoping this is just a case of the Fillmore police officer(s) overstepping their authority a little bit and that all city property is not closed to metal detecting as you were told.

I will do some asking around. I have hunted in Fillmore before, but it has been a couple years. There are some Utah State Historical sites in Fillmore, being the original capitol of the Utah Territory, but I can't imagine that the city park is one of them. I'll have to get back on this one.

Sorry to hear about your issues with detecting your city. Just for future reference, when dealing with the local authorities (or any government officials for that matter) the last thing you ever want to bring up is the "I pay taxes" line. It will get you absolutely nowhere, and there's no faster way to irritate and offend a public employee.

It was the north park not the old town hall but just think all the silver at the old state house by the way where do you live Rich maybe this spring we could hunt I have permission to hunt the first store in fillmore when the snow melts it was built in 1840s-50s let me know

I am up in Salt Lake a couple hrs north. Would love to join you for a hunt. Club has a meeting Thurs night and I will ask around about your situation.

Hey there detectorfreak,

Did some asking around at the club meeting last night. Not much more information on your dilema regarding hunting on city property where you are.

Recommendation? Typically, if a city has actually passed an ordinance like this, it is due to some sort of abuse in the past. Might be people coming into town and digging up the park, parking strips, town hall or other property and leaving a mess or some residents complaining about problems dealing with hunters. There is a story there you should be able to get more information about.

Sometimes a little good press goes a long ways. I read on another post that you found a war Medal of a long ago town resident that you were able to return. What a great thing. Write up a short story and drop it off with a picture or two at the town paper.

While you're at it, drop by city hall and talk with the folks there about the ordinance and find out how it came to be. Is there an actually ordinance? If not, has there been a problem hunters making a mess. Perhaps some sort of agreement can be reached or written permission can be arranged.

Be glad to help anyway possible. I would also love to go hunting anytime. Just tell me when and where and I'll see what I can do to be there.

Hey fellow Utes,
I might add that there HAS to be a written ordinance for the the Mayor to use as he can not arbitrarily state his opinion just for you. Get a hold of it and when it was passed. My experience is an argument will get you no where but as Rich says it gives you some reasoning to start from. I hate this part of life but now it is up to you and others to do a good job "selling" or promoting why detecting should be allowed and how it may be an advantage to the city and not a disadvantage. Most of us don't like to put that kind of effort into it but you will find plenty of opportunities to "represent" if you keep your eyes open.
Perhaps a city councilman may have need of your services some time or city parks may need to find some lost object...I found a lost gold chain for the city parks employees once you can bet I made as big a deal as I could with them so they would not forget me.

Anyway If you cant get to the parks there is some interesting history down that way that may lead you to some other detecting sites you can hunt.

best of luck
