Head phones for x-terra 705

When I got my 705 , I got a $30 set of Garrett head phones...I know there are higher end head phones..am I really missing anything with these head phones, and if so what should I be looking for to use with this machine....

I am probably in the minority but I use and like the Minelab Koss UR-30 headphones. I have used them with every Minelab detector that I have had. I really like the fact that they cover the entire ear and yet they are not so tight on your head. I have tried Grey Ghosts, Black Widows, etc but the UR-30 is just more comfortable to me because I always wear a cap when detecting and the give me a little more room. I have a set of Whites Pro Star Headphones that really sound good but there again they are tight, hot, and uncomfortable after a while. I have used the Garretts that you are using if they are the Clear Sound (or something like that) and I thought they were pretty good. I keep a set in my backpack as a backup. I just prefer a over ear vs on ear headphone.

I prefer earbuds. Lighter, cooler, don't shift on my head when I'm bent way over probing around in the hole. I clip the cord to my shirt collar and don't pull them out of my ears when I accidently catch the cord.

I have several "phones" that I use depending on where I am hunting. When around areas that have snakes, especially rattlers, I use a single headphone. If it is hot I use one that goes over one ear and takes a stereo signal and puts it into a single signal. Otherwise I use "Rattler" headphone. These are also handy to prevent people from "sneaking" up on you.

If there are no issues I use Black Widows. They are almost soundproof so you can hear even the lowest signals. In fact, I will be listing a new pair on the bay when I get back from my roadtrip next week.

The koss 30's are very good, they have the audio /bass range
that is basically designed for the 705,s etc.
I would avoid the indoor stereo types as the first thing to break will be the lead
as they aren't designed to move left and right thousands of times per outing. :wiggle:

From my experience, any headphones will do. You will hear all of the tones the detector puts out. The pitch might be a little different between phones but is no big deal.

I've got a pair of indoor type from WalMart. They're pretty hardy though. Very sensitive and are called Noise Pollution brand. 49.95 . I thought they were a little high but they're big and very soft and comfortable. Also wanted to go straight home from taking wife shopping and hunt with new 705. I hate most anything on or in my ears but these I actually forget they're there until I set the 705 down and walk away jerking my head back as they and my ball cap hat fly off down into the mud. Happens at least once per hunt.

I have grey ghost originals. I wasted as much as they cost messing around with cheap alternatives before I bought them.

I've got the Koss UR-30s, some apple in ear buds that I got with my iPhone and a top end set of noise canceling head phones and I always go back to the apple in ear buds. As far as sound quality goes, I find the Koss headphones are noticeably worse than the others. My noise canceling ones the best. I like the in ear buds because they're a nice compromise between hearing my surroundings and hearing the detector. The noise canceling ones are fantastic, especially if you really want to monitor a low volume threshold tone but you don't hear any surrounding noise - not always a good thing if you're out bush and an inquisitive cow sneaks up behind you. I was disappointed with the Koss' as the threshold tone was much louder and clearer in my other headphones than they were with the Koss'. So, my consensus is, just get a reasonable set of headphones, as the tones on your detector are not at all complicated, especially compared to music.

Oh, I do love the springy cable of the Koss' and I've found a similar cable that I'm going to wire up with a 3.5 mm female plug and a 6 mm make plug and a clip to attach to my belt or shirt. That way I can just plug in whatever headphones I like and still have the advantage of a flexible cord.
