Headphone problems.

I just remembered that one of the sides of my earpieces was shorting out. I'm pretty techniclly oriented, but.... the last time I tried to take a pair of headphones apart, they really "came apart". They don't put these things together like a rear wheel bike hub or something, where it's solid parts your working with. At least that's what it seems. Any tips or tricks on that one? I have a soldering iron and a multimeter to check the continuity and all that stuff. I'm just worried about not being able to get at it or not being able to put em back together again because they're probably plastic snap on stuff. (Ah, gee, what's a poor guy to do):( I can't afford a set of Grey Ghost ones yet, so I need to try and repair these cheezy Koss ones. Marc Trainor. P.S. I thought Koss was suppost to be a good set!!! I guess it "just depends".

Hi Beachguy, haven't had problems with my set of Koss (UR. 30), but the ones that go with the Excalibur sometimes come apart in the water, which is a pain. But the Koss are supposed to be okay, a lot of detectorists use them here.:)

Hi beachguy777
I used the Koss R/100's for a long time, great headphones but very poor design. About every three months like clockwork the frame would break right where they were attached to the ear-cup. My wife says its due to my fat head, but I still say it's poor design. Go to the Koss website there should be an address plus instructions where to send them to get another pair. As far as I know the Koss line has a lifetime warranty I used to send mine back with a check for $6.00 and they would send me a new pair, no questions asked. I must have done this at least four times. Now I use the Grey Ghost Deep Woods and have my Koss for back up. Hope this helps.

Yea, Brainy, that's pretty good info. Boy what a pain to have to send em back that often, but at least if they take care of the problem, that's certainly a good thing. I'll have to look into the warranty thing. I got mine as a package deal from Kellyco, so I'm not sure if they have a warrenty, but I'll check into it. Sounds like the Grey Ghost are pretty "killer" phones. I keep hearing that name Grey Ghost. It's starting to haunt me.:|

Hello Angela. I have been using the Koss UR 30 for close to five years and have no problem with them except that the curly cord has stretched about 15 inches. It becomes a nuisance when it gets in your way so I tuck it around the belt and water backpack to take up the slack. The different tones for the targets sound is very crisp and was the same on the sovereign. When new the tension of the curly cord was just right not to tight so as to not dislodge the headphones from your head when placing the detector down to recover your target. Other ones I have tried were too tight. Stan. From down under. Australia.

If I get brave enough, I might try and replace the "too long" curly cord on mine for a shorter curly cord, like I "think" I see on the Gry Ghost or some of the other ones. Could be a scary proposition if I can't snap it all back together right. I'll give it considerable thought and inspection first. :(:|

Are you still detecting the military site? Have you come up with some interesting relics of late? Don't know if I mentioned to you, but Garry's bought an Excalibur a few months back, and absolutely loves it. He's found lots of rings and coins. Best part of it, all of the rings fit either fingers on my hands! What girl needs to folk out for jewelry when there's and Excal around! We're coming up to summer, so I suppose it's warming up more where you are! Can't wait for the extra ring and coin drops on the sand!!

Hello Angela. Over the last few years I have had some good days detecting on the gold coast beaches south of Brisbane. There are over thirty eight life savers towers about one kilometres (apart more or less) and about thirty miles of continuous beach. On a good year I could pick up about two thousand dollars in coins and a good amount of gold and silver rings plus other jewellery. My wife claims the gold rings and some have different types of stones in them. My daughter gets the pick of the silver rings and a lot have various stones in them also she likes silver jewellery. .The rest of the silver rings go to my younger sister

Well guess what??:| I actually did what actually even makes sense, here, and I don't even know why I waited. I actually called Kellyco, where I got them, and low and behold, the guy there of course didn't know which model I had. I didn't know at first, because for the life of me, I can't find a model number anywhere on the phone, but.... they have some great pictures on their website, and these look like the so-called "best" model which is about $119.00 at Kellyco. Kellyco says in the ad that they have a LIFETIME WARRENTY. The guy at Kellyco gave me the phone number for Koss, I called them and they said: Just send em in with a check for 6 bucks for return postage and that should be it. Boy, I hope they're right. I'm gonna try and insure them anyway, but I'm hoping for the best. I only wish I could get a shorter curly cord put on them. Maybe I'll call back and quiz them on that before I send them in. At any rate, I'll let you know what happens. Wish me luck.:geek::look::O:|

Glad to hear you're out and about as always. Your photos inspire me to get out there detecting any opportunity I get! Hello Beachguy, good to hear the headphone problem is sorting out! Can't wait to hear about you detecting ventures from here on!
Cheers Angela (Golden)

Yea Golden, I've been bending your ear for so long, if I don't come up with something interestin pretty soon, I'm gonna have to eat crow. Not only to interest you but me too. I'm looking pretty hard now at the old neighborhoods downtown where "some" of the bad people live, so I gotta be careful, but I think in the daytime I might have a chance of survival. I'll keep you posted

I just re-read that post and it sounded pretty negative the way I said it. Let me re-phrase it to mean: It might be a "kind of scary" neighborhood to detect in because there's some pretty unsaviory looking people walking around down there and that's where a lot of the crime occurrs. I don't mind poor people, just the ones that carry guns and knives.

I think you'll find most of us avoid going into the "bad areas", if any around us, or picking the best time to detect, so as not to get ostracised over our hobby. Pays to be cautous, but nice to take a few "risks" too!

Well the one good thing, for me here in San Diego, at least, even though I'm talking about all these bad neighborhoods, there are some that are still old, with sidewalk frontages of dirt that aren't that scary, and some are downright on the upswing. We've had a huge rebirth, as you will, of some of the scarier neighborhoods where the clientel there is definitly on the up swing. In otherwords, they're upgrading the neighborhood. Trouble with that is, once they start doing that they start putting nice plants and grass in where I want to dig, so I need to get going on some of those before they're too upgraded to detect.

Hello Beachguy.I understand what you are saying. Those older parts of town could be a problem because of the lower lifestyles that are around. A lot of those places probably would produce some good finds if you could find a good spot perhaps some old house lots or car parks beside or behind some of the old shops. I would be taking great care detecting on by my self especially if you were to be confronted by a small group of youths that decided they wanted what you had. I would stay in the open and plenty of daylight. A friend I got to know on our forum came to Queensland on holidays and stayed in an apartment near the beach and decided to try a little bit of night detecting. This beach is a popular spot and has some reasonable lighting covering the beach. After a while he noticed a group of youths watching and following him. He picked up the pace a bit and headed for a couple of food shops still open as the boys started to close in on him. He said he was lucky the shops were open and phoned his wife to pick him up and was quite shaken by the event. So you be careful. All the best Stan. From down under. Australia.

Hey Stan, your not off the track at all here. I'm a delivery driver, by trade, so to speak, and as I was making a pharmacy "home delivery" in one of the "questionable" parts of town here, four young guys came up to me and said: "Gee, don't you know that this is the area where the pizza guy got killed". Well that sure made my night to hear that. I tried to act cool and said I was just delivering some prescriptions, thanks a lot, but I got out of there fast. It really is risky, at night, especially which is when that happened. Thanks for the heads up, and it saddens me to think that this could even happin on a public beach or somewhere where you'd think it was "ok".

Rainy, your right. I'm gonna send em in to Koss and in the future, do what you did, buy some Grey Ghosts, and use the Koss for a backup. Thank God for warrenties though.

Stan, I'm in awe at what you've done here. Do you mean 2 grand in "face value" of the coins, or are you including the coin dealer, numismatic value? Either way, I'm just blown away at the ammout of great stuff you've found, and it's nice to see that your giving a lot of it to people in your family. I'm also impressed that some of it was found with the soverign, with the special meter. Very interesting. I'm just wondering about how many hours of the week are you going out, or is that not a fair question? You're certainly successful and honestly I'm trying to pick your brain a little here.:| Keep up the good work and keep sending those fabulous photos. It really inspires a guy like me.:|
