headphones volume control

Hi every one

I have a set of good headphones that I want to add a volume control to,

any help will be gratefully received.

question 1) can I use a single volume pot, or do I need a double pot (two pots mounted on the one control)
dont really want two pots, one in each ear.

2) if using a single pot to control both speaker (together) what value should it be (oms)

3) same really but if using the twin pot method (two pots on one control) what should the value be,

lastly, depending on which way is best, what wires go were, red/white/black. on the tree terminal volume pot, be it a single or a double.

many thanks

You can buy an in-line volume control at Radio Shack. Then simply plug one end into the detector and you phones into the other end. I think is about $7.00

Hi, I Take It That You Are Going To Use These Headphones For Your Metal Detector. Since It's A Mono Source You Only Need One Potentiometer. You Will However Have To Make Some Wiring Changes.. A 1K To 10K Potentiometer Would Be A Good Start..Thanks

Can be done, may be more trouble than you care to get involve in. . Is Your machine Mono, or stereo? The headphone you have may not have the room to fit the audio taper pot into. Is your headphones 100 Ohms or better? Just a few questions to ask before you start. I did build a pair using shooting headphones, 100 ohms speakers, heavy guitar cord with gold plated plug, and single audio pot. It compares with some of the nicer headphones, but would I do it again the answer is no. I would rather pay a little more for the luxury of less stress. Oh course if you enjoy doing this type of stuff do it, I know I use to build different electronic gadgets, but that

I would go with khouse suggestion. In fact I did this years ago. It's non-intrusive to the machine and/or headphones, quick, affordable, and can be used on other machines as well. Mainly - it works.
