Heck of a Hunt for Capri_Auto and Me!

Erik in NJ

New member
Yesterday I met up with forum member capri_auto (Chris) to hunt a piece of private property we got exclusive access to about an hour from here. It was great to be able to hunt with Chris for the day and we became friends right away.

We're still working on the pics, but here's a list of the coin finds from the 5 hour hunt:

1 Barber Half 1912-S
3 Barber Quarters 1898, 1899, 1900
1 Barber Dime 1906
1 V-Nickel (working on date)
3 IH Cents (working on dates)

1 Draped Bust Half Cent (working on date)
1 Large Cent 1830
1 2-Cent Piece (1864?)

1 Carlos III Real 1764 (origin Mexico)

We also have unearthed a plethora of very interesting relics of all sorts that have yet to be cleaned and photographed. I'll post my stuff when I get it cleaned and then I'll let Chris post his -- don't wanna steal his thunder as he found a coin spill I've never heard of being done before , but I was there to see it!

We'll post the pics when everything has been cleaned and scanned.

Definitely a dream hunt, I will never forget Erik's hand shaking when he walked over with the reale, he said to me "I almost beat your barbers" hahaha how's that for modesty! I've only been detecting since about March and quickly learned that you need to work hard to find anything at all. Finding a site like this was incredibly humbling... This forum has kept me motivated and educated.

Here are some scans of the coins I found. I dug 3 barber quarters in one hole! 2 were stuck together due to copper leaching(the green stuff) and the other was still in the hole when I rescanned. All 3 are in amazing condition and will clean up nice. Barber half was a real surprise, it was on edge and threw my pinpoint way off. Deepest coin of the day.... 1919s wheat hahaha, how does that happen? Oldest coin found ever... draped bust half cent, only 5 inches deep. I found it with some copper junk in the hole.

I will post scans after I clean them along with the other great relics we found.

HH!

We had just stepped onto the property and I dug an old square ladies compact that I thought was pretty cool. Chris was about thirty feet away workng another area and I'll never forget him calling me over "Look I just found two Barber Quarters!" I came over to look and as I was shaking my head in amazement as he says "There's another one in here -- three Barber Quarters in the same hole!!" I've never even heard of that before, and he does this as one of his first targets of the day! We knew we had a good spot to detect and I was humbled by his amazing finds already. I regained some self-respect when I got a signal I thought might be a silver dime at about 7". When the disc popped out of the ground it was about the size of a nickel and thinner - I knew it had to be something good. I saw it was silver and could see a date of 1764!! Wasn't even sure what it was as my 1/2 reale a few weeks ago from the same timeframe (1779) was much more worn and has a different obverse. I was shaking as I found it and while showing it to Chris. We figured we may have hit a colonial occupation layer. About 20 minutes later, working the same general area as the Barber quarters, Chris comes over to me with a GORGEOUS Barber half dollar in his hands! I was yet again humbled! In the mean time we were pulling some amazing relics including jewelery and some fine buttons that will be posted soon.

Do ya think you guys have covered that area, or ya going back?
MAN...that hunt alone should have been in a magazine:bouncy:

Maybe we should do a better group shot and then one when everything is cleaned up well. Would love to get published - any suggestions as to magazine? We're going back soon, lots more ground to cover and we left a lot of signals as we got tired - not sure we'll ever repeat that kind of hunt again and we were just meandering around looking for better areas. I'm hoping we'll do a more methodical search next few visits.

Thanks again for you post and kind words!
