Did you mean to post this SE question in the E-Trac forums, or was it a miss click... and I'm sure there are plenty of guys in here that can help :)

Good luck!

If weight is a factor and you intend on putting anything like the X1 on it.... then you best get the Pro just for weight if nothing elce. It does has a preset.... not PROGRAMS. If you have no patience then ... yep your life just got complicated. Both of the machines are excellent machines thou. My suggestion is to hunt with someone that has learned them... then buy a splitter at radio shack so you both can hear the same thing at various settings. Factory present is always recommended.... but id bump up the sensitivity a bit just because the machine is going to adjust it at its whim anyway based on the conditions. Where you going to be using them.... beach park farm? Ive found on the beach and fields switching to Ferr sounds and setting your Iron Mask at say 30 gets rid of most of the mineral and some EMI noise so then you can just dig anything on the right half of the smartscreen until you learn what you are digging. For someone starting out.... just set IM at factory 22 setting. If you want to say you know your machine.... dont trade it until its paid for its self. By then you should know if its your cup of tea.

Bill...here's the best advice I can offer.....LEAVE it in the factory preset conductive sounds settings.. while hunting in the smartfind screen.

When you get it...do a factory reset by holding the power button for 5 seconds as you turn it on which puts it at the preset factory settings.

Take your time...swing very slow...and do NOT worry about anybody's settings right now.

ONLY 2 things I would even consider changing from the stock factory settings which is pretty much a coin program....

1) possibly set the iron mask at -22 on the SE...but leave everything else factory preset.

2) The only other thing I would consider changing would be to put the sensitivity in semi auto and set it at 26.

Both of those change suggestions do not even need to be made IMHO...but if you must tinker:cool:...then tinker with only those two things.

Everything else....I strongly recomend leaving alone for a few weeks.

Pay close attention to the barrage of sounds you hear...do NOT try too much too fast...just have FUN.

These Explorers and E-Tracs are more than capable of hitting 8"+ deep coins right out of the box in the factory preset mode.

Once you have quite a few hours on it...and have familiarized yourself with the "language" it speaks...then you can start to piddle with settings if need be.

Of all the things I get asked about through messages...this is the number one thing...and my advice never changes.

I think it's a big mistake for new users to get caught up in what other's settings are and they try too much too fast...then get discouraged and sell the Explorer.

Just take your time...enjoy...and get a "feel" for the explorer before taking big leaps...and the learning curve will lessen a bunch.

Gotta' run now as I'm with Dad and he is not feeling well at all.

to keep alot of the noise at by use the semi auto as bryce suggests. thats a big tip right there.

Man Neal... i didnt know you were such a collector or detectors. Just curious, whats the advantage of each of them over the explorer? Do you carry more than one of them with you when you go out?
