HELP! I broke something in my Goldscan!

Hey fellow detectorists!

On the weekend I decided to make up an external battery pack for my 5C. While I had the detector apart, I slipped with the screwdriver and managed to break a big resistor on the front of the board (where the coil plugs in) literally in half. It looks like something from a 1970's TV... Its big!!

Can anybody tell me what I need to replace this part because the ones at the local electronics store look nothing like this.

Also, why is there a part from a 1970's tv in my new detector :) ?

Thanks for any help!
Deano

Hi Dean,

Can you take a pic of the part and the area? If the big resistor is mounted on the pc board, it will have to be replaced. If it is off the board and sort of hanging in between the two connectors, it may be the resistor for the probe. If this is the case, then the detector will most likely work but the probe will not. In either case, the resistor should be replaced just to be safe.

Whatever you do, do not cut it out before any pics are taken. Taking the pc board out is not fun. If the repair can be made without doing that, it would be much easier.

So, a pic will help.

Hi Reg,

I dont have a way to take a photo since I missed the whole digital revolution, but I can describe it well enough, It's a big resistor and it's mounted to the actual board but its sitting above the board with neatly folded legs..

---{====}--- This is about the actual size of the resistor. I think the base colour is brownish... Its hard to tell because Im colour blind.

But it does sit raised above the board. It should be identifiable because its the biggest component on the entire board that I could see!! Everything else is SMC except this monster resistor!

Thanks,
Deano

Sounds like you broke the damping resistor. As to it being a 1970's TV resistor, nothing could be further from the truth. It is a 1K 3W metal film resistor that is common in many up to date high current high voltage circuits, particularly power supplies. It has to be that size because it runs at a high temperature. It is also mounted off the board so that air can circulate freely around it to help disperse the heat. As it is a 5C you must have recently bought it and you ought to have contacted your dealer before attempting modifications, as this now jeopardises the warranty.

Eric.
